Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally brewed in August of 2015 with our friends Brad Clark of Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery, Chad Yakobson of Crooked Stave Artisan Ales and Cory King of Side Project Brewing, we once again brew this beer—inspired by the German radler—with ample amounts of grapefruit zest and juice, wheat, and oats. In perfect time for our Festival of Farmhouse Ales, where we'll be joined by these same friends again... this bright, aromatic Farmstead ale is a refreshing 3.2% abv and now in a larger format from the original release—for better sharing! Best enjoyed chilled between 40-45F.

Excellent soft but lively feel.

Pale yellow brew, transparent and lively, topped by a lightly frothy snow white head. Decent head production and retention.

Sweet honey and lemon notes on the nose, along with a slight mustiness and oak. A nice tartness develops the longer it sits in the glass.

On the palate, the light touch and almost watery feel really hint strongly at the Radler inspiration, although the flavor profile is still very much that of a HF farmhouse ale: honey, wheat, straw, lemon, grapefruit, a touch of peel, and light tannins.

Lively carbonation; very light feel, with a slightly sticky finish. A little too much like seltzer water (like a session IPA, but nowhere near as hoppy).

While I prefer saisons a touch thicker, the amount of flavor packed into such a tiny package (in terms of ABV) is really incredible.

750 mL bottle. Pale yellow and hazy. Smells of citrus, a little bit of funky yeast, light acidity. Soft oak, maybe? Taste is pretty simple. Grapefruit, lemon, and orange citrus. Light tartness. Faint grain and a little oak. Very light body. Pleasant and drinkable. Very simple but very nice.

This one pours a light clear yellow, with a big billowing head, and lots of lacing.

This smells really nice- damp funky grapefruit, lemon, hay, grassiness, and lime.

I've never liked a radler as much as I like this beer. It's impossible how much flavor is in this one, given the miniscule 3.2% ABV. Most of Hill Farmstead's saison have a "house feel" to them. It kind of reminds you of a Vermont hillside, and this beer is no different. It's bucolic, light and airy, with a killer grapefruit character- juicy, slightly tart and sour, with lemon/lime as well, as well as a dry crisp grassiness on the finish.

This has a mouthfeel that's so airy it almost feels like nothing- it's honestly unbelievably nice. The carbonation level is high-ish.

This is a really unique and cool beer- and a testament to the talents of the brewers involved.

Consumed 11/27/16

A: Pale gold to straw - some chill haze - pours with a medium-large, bright white head, fades to a wispy cap, medium collar, leaves some streaks of lacing

S: Citrusy with some light farmhouse - some really nice citrus, with some grapefruit flesh and zest - orange zest and lime - light farmhouse funk, probably from Hill Farmstead's saison yeast - light malt base, with some pale malts, touches of wheat and oats

T: Light and exceptionally lively - really nice citrus, with some grapefruit flesh, grapefruit zest - some orange peel, light touches of lemon and lime - lightly tart - some saison yeast, with some touches of funk, spice, and straight-up yeast - some fruity esters - malts are light but they have some depth, a touch of pale grain, wheat, and oats - low sweetness, very clean finish

M: Light body, medium carbonation, super crisp, refreshing

O: Insanely flavorful for a 3% ABV beer

Elaborative #4 is supremely refreshing and flavorful. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, as Hill Farmstead does everything right, even a radler.
