Style: American Strong Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): not listed

Notes / Commercial Description:
Madness & Civilization is a panorama of our barrel aging program—oak-aged beers that emerge from their individual silences to find structure and voice as a unified composition. This is the result of an unpredictable state of permanent happenstance—a dialogue with our evolving approach to blending that challenges convention and circumstance. Each release will include multiple threads and is likely to approximate the style of an imperial stout.

Release #5: A blend of Aaron, Everett, and Works of Love: De Molen, all aged in bourbon barrels for more than 2 years.

500ml bottle poured into a Lambikstoemper tumbler.

A~ black as could be with a nice tan head and no lacing.

S~ whoa i smell a lot of Aaron!! straight chocolate up front followed by coffee, caramel, toffee and a lot of vanilla!

T~ flowing Aaron! sweet caramel, toffee malt which blends with nice roasted coffee and vanilla ending with more sweetness with some nice candy sugar! amazing!

M~ amazingly smooth and silky! not hot at all and the carb is just right.

O~ my favorite of the series! followed by fresh MC#4, i loved those peppers! anyway this is simply incredible! its got the great feel and sweetness of Aaron, the amazing BA stout qualities of WoL De Molen and the super nice mouth feel of Everett which really thickens up and helps the WoL aspect. perfectly executed blend!

Decadence rears its beautiful head when the Brewers at Hill Farmstead are at the helm. Their blends of strong ale, stout and their bourbon barrel techniques all awaken to build a beast that's sweet, roasty and spirited.

Black and with a heavy viscosity, the beer's pour musters a dainty coffee-like creme and syrupy legging. Its robust scent is chocked full of maple, molasses, toffee and coffee while its succulent sweetness washes the palate with a host of hearty, toasty malt sweetnesses that range from brown sugar to chocolate.

Slow to relax, the sweetness settles in on the tongue with notions of espresso, tiramisu, brownie batter and fudge. Its roasted and toasted edges bring a balance to sweetness with their own coffee-like bitterness. Finishing with sweet char, the barrel influence glows with its own coconut, caramel and oaken vanilla spice.

Full and lavishly smooth on the palate, its luscious and pillowy textures are weighted on the palate due to the beer's low-lying carbonation and its associated creaminess. Lightly oily and firmly chewy, the beer is off-cloying but still suitable for a nightcap sipper.

500ml bottle purchased at the brewery for $20. Dark black color, short head. Aroma is sweet, notes of barrels and spirits, hints of malt, and something I could not quite place. Flavor has notes of a bourbon barrel, barleywine, stout, very sweet and has something I cannot place. Overall pretty good but half a bottle was enough for me.

Pour with almost no head. Jet black and oily. Smells of sweet bourbon and intensely inviting. Roasty chocolately bourbon balance. Touch of sweetness.. Hint of vanilla ? Typical HF barrel notes. Totally complimentary, present, and not overbearing. While thinner than a typical imperial stout, has a rounded and velvety feel too it. Fudgy like Damon but slightly more thin mouthfeel with a bit of heat with a warm tingly feel as it falls off the tongue. Another amazing beer in this series. My only quams is the slight heat but I tend to be highly sensitive to it. Don't turn this one down ;)

500 mL bottle. Black without much head. Sweet smelling. Lots of brown sugar. Bourbon. Roasted malt with some rich fudge. Taste is strong bourbon and very sweet. Heavy oak and dark chocolate. Low carbonation. Boozy. Heavy. Kinda maple-y in the back end. Really sweet, which I don't love, but the other flavors are interesting enough to keep it very good.

This one pours a dark, silky and oily looking black, with a very small head, and no lacing.

Smells incredible, really- huge caramel notes come up from the Aaron, toffee and oak, too, with tons of chocolate, rich dark fruits, and a lot of bourbon. Though there’s a lot of bourbon on the nose, it doesn’t feel overpowering.

The taste feels the same. The blend they came up with for this is masterful, with Aaron showing itself nicely amidst the other stout components, with nice caramel and toffee, a lot of vanilla, chocolate and dark fruit components, almost like chocolate-covered raisins, with a nice roasted malt character still remaining, and sweet, slightly spicy bourbon coming to play near the end. It all comes together beautifully. This is masterful.

The mouthfeel is moderately thick, certainly not “chewy” or super thick, which is the case for most HF BA stouts, seemingly because they’re in the barrel for so long, usually.

This is really quite amazing. A wonderful treat to drink.

A: Pour is a sticky black, with some oily traces of brown. The head is tan, and the retention is elusive

S: Bourbon caramel, roasted malt, with hints of smoked wood, ash, and leather. Can easily become preoccupied with the sweet maple subtleties of vanilla, brownie, coconut, and dark fruit

T: Taste is sweet and oily. Notes coincide to temperature changes, as more substitutions are drawn upon: cocoa roasted marshmallow, bourbon espresso, toffee, vanilla, coconut, raisins

M: Wholefully rich, creamy, and silky body, with temperate carbonation; mouthfeel is exquisite

O: Ingeniously, and tactfully blended. A scrumptious bourbon treat, with so much to muse
