Notes / Commercial Description:
In November of 2015, our friends Wayne, Joey, Justin and Geiger from Cigar City Brewing visited us, and joined us in a collaborative brew day on our small system, crafting a beautiful, tart, Belgian-inspired brown ale, which was fermented entirely in an oak tank and then conditioned in wine barrels.

375ml bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead taster.

A~ more red than brown, light bubbly head that goes away quickly and no lacing.

S~ almost like a caramel app... lemon! haha! tart lemon, caramel malt, candied sugar and a little wine barrel funk on the end.

T~ sweet berry wine! slight dark fruits, lots of blackberry and a little black currant. very sweet up front with a nice lemony tart finish all wrapped in a little bretty funk.

M~ perfect carb. very smooth and extremely refreshing.

O~ oude bruin is not usually my style but i actually really enjoyed this! it was more of a well balanced oude bruin, flanders red blend. CCB sure loves their browns haha! would bang again!

Appearance of a typical brown ale but the scent of a touch of funk quickly makes this atypical. Sweet candied aroma accurately predicts a flavor that is complimented with a mild tartness. Sweet and sour. A bit of an odd mix but worked for me. Light body with a soft mouthfeel. A bit too sweet overall but the tartness quickly cuts the sweetness and gives it a great lingering tangy aftertaste. Browns are rarley my bag but this was a treat. Little bit goes a long way but definitely worth trying. Interesting beer and guessing the wine barrel did wonders for this one.

375 mL bottle. Murky and syrupy looking amber body. Smells very malty. Nutty and kinda earthy. Taste is dramatically different. Red wine and a strong sourness. Earthy and bitter. Faint nutty malts. Dry and oaky in the back end. Medium body. Smells like it will be heavier. Low carbonation. Smells very blah and then tastes nice. Still not sure it qualifies as really good, though.

This one pours a slightly murky and moderately dark brown, with a small head and not much lacing.

This smells like lemon candy, caramel malt, and slight roast, with some vinous notes.

This is a very delicate beer- the malt character is simple, but pleasing when tasted in combination with the light Brett, lemon acidity, and dark cherry flavors. There's some caramel and a slight roast character.

This is light bodied, slightly effervescent, with a good level of carbonation.

You don't see this style all that often. But you can be assured that any style Hill Farmstead tackles- they will nail it.

Pours a hazy dull mahogany hue with a loose, tan-colored head that dissipates into a soapy slick and a frothy band around the edges. Nose is slightly vinous but somewhat dull for the style. Taste is just meh - very muted, dull and watery with a hint of lactose. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a mild, almost still carbonation and a kiss of acidity. Overall, a bit disappointing as I love the style; however, this was pretty lackluster.

Pours brown. Lots of mildewy funk on the aroma. There is something lactic about the aroma and flavor. It's a chalky brown ale. Sour cherries on the finish. Lot of wildness going on. Gotta wonder if this could have enjoyed more time on oak as it was brewed in November and bottled in January.

Bottle. Poured a hazy brown color. Aroma is pretty subdued. Sweet with some musty barrel and funk. Light tartness. Aroma is not very intense. I could stand to get more from the smell. The nose is also not as intense or even as inviting as I was expecting. The overall flavor isn't exactly mellow but it needs more pop. Sweet, slightly barreled, funky, and kinda sour. I found this one to be a disappointment.
