Madness & Civilization is a panorama of our barrel aging program—oak aged beers that emerge from their individual silences to find structure and voice as a unified composition. This is the result of an unpredictable state of permanent happenstance—a dialogue with our evolving approach to blending that challenges convention and circumstance. Each release will include multiple threads and is likely to approximate the style of an imperial stout.
Release #7: A blend of Everett, Birth of Tragedy and Genealogy of Morals aged in Bourbon and Rye Whiskey barrels for more than 20 months, then further conditioned on select vanilla beans prior to bottle conditioning.

Very dark appearance with little head. Aroma is a slight vanilla with a prominent oak barrel that is quite pleasant. Taste is also a pleasant vanilla and oak barrel with a nice mild whisky accent.

500ml bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass. Enjoyed on 2.6.17, reviewed from Tasting Journal.
The beer pours a jet black color, very thick and oily, viscous and quite opaque with a firm finger of tan head, good retention and spotted lace. The aroma is soft but complex, lots of stone fruit, mild roast, light vanilla bean with charred oak, a touch of bourbon, dark chocolate and roasted grain, certainly a nice expression of Everett in the nose. While complex, rich and intriguing it doesn't quite leap out of the glass. The flavors are complex and elegant with plenty of stone fruits, dark chocolate, a touch of sweet marshmallow with smooth bourbon that really amplifies the beer, strong roasted grain, charred oak with a lingering cherry flavor. The mouthfeel is great, coating, heavy body that's creamy, soft and smooth with a very easy finish.
Verdict: A very nice barrel aged stout from Hill Farmstead. The blend of beers offers a really nice diverse set of flavors and the balance is excellent. It's a touch on the roasty side for what I like, but the body is great and showcases a variety of flavors that Hill Farmstead has to offer.
