375ml bottle poured into a Jester King Zwanze geuze tumbler.

A~brown... of course! haha! slight head and a little lacing.

S~ lemony tartness up front followed by caramel like malt ending with vinegary wine barrel funk.

T~ pretty much the same as the nose with a little more citrus here, lemon/lime and orange. slight roastyness on the back end as well.

M~ smooth with nice carb but a little syrupy.

O~ this series is definitely hit or miss in my opinion but this one is definitely a hit! solid brown backbone, i'm gonna go ahead and guess its George cause theres no better brown! George base aged in viscus wine barrels with some sumac citrus funk!? i'll take it!

375 mL bottle. Deep brown body with a big khaki head. Smells of wine barrel, toasted malts, light acidity. Tastes of tart lemon, toasted malts, wine barrel. Mostly the same as the nose. Dry with high carbonation. I'm not familiar with sumac, so I don't know what I'm looking for here. It's pretty good, though, especially for a tart brown ale.

Bottle poured into fluted snifter.

5 from LOG series sampled back to back by chronological order.

Pours a reddish tinted brown. Hazy, but not opaque. Thin tan head that settles into thick ring with floating bubbly islands.

Aroma is deep and rich, slightly roasty malts with earthy spice. Toffee and caramel sweetness with a hint of wood and tart funk.

Flavor is smooth with layers of earthy, herbal, and sweet malts. Sumac adds a hint of spice and floral flavor. Malts come through as rich caramel. Lightly tart to balance everything else together.

Medium body, lighter than expected from appearance, moderate carbonation.

My favorite overall from the 5 we sampled. Complex and rich depth of flavor. Surprised I enjoyed as much as this based on the description.

375ml bottle, March 10, 2016 stamped on the front, poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass. Enjoyed on 1.8.2017, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a burgundy color, brown and red hues when struck by the light with a white head, hardly a finger tall with low retention that yields spots of lace. The aroma leads with lots of caramel apple, plenty of brown sugar, caramel and amber grain, light vinegar, mild funk and some stone fruit. The flavors are a bit better than the nose suggests, but not by a large margin, rather bland in terms of a funky/sour brown ale, dark grain, light funk, stone fruits, mild vinegar and apple, a bit of citrus and cherry pit linger. The mouthfeel is nice, coating, very lively, lots of carbonation with a lighter medium body that is delicate and playful with a tart finish.

Verdict: A real miss for me from Hill Farmstead. There just doesn't really seem to be anything in this beer that really shines or pops, it's somewhat bland, well balanced at least. It's inoffensive and innocuous flavor wise, but that's almost an offense in and of itself.
