Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): not listed

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Eleventh in our ongoing series of experimental stout blends, this version of Madness and Civilization is constructed with a few barrels of two-year-old Damon (brewed with honey) and a larger quantity of an imperial stout brewed in honor of batch 1,000. Batch 1,000 (or 1k, as we refer to it), is a 33º American-style sweet imperial stout that spent more than a year in bourbon barrels. The beers were then married on organic Ecuadorian cacao nibs and organic Ethiopian coffee beans before packaging. After a satisfactory period of bottle conditioning, the beer is ready for release.

This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

500 mL bottle. Black body. Smells of booze, roasted malt, chocolate, and a little coffee. Tastes of strong alcohol throughout. Chocolate. Roasted malt. Coffee. Bourbon and oak round it out. Extremely boozy, but it's really good.

This one pours with a very dark black and forbidding hue, with a tiny head and no lacing.

This smells decadent- with rich and high quality chocolate, bittersweet honey, roasty espresso, vanilla bean, milk chocolate syrup, oak, and very light dark fruit.

I didn't even know at first that this had coffee + cacoa nibs added to it. It's done subtly, as the base Damon/B1K blend is already super rich and chocolate-heavy to begin with. There's some oaky bitterness, a deep and dark roast flavor, some light smoke, and marshmallow/vanilla flavors. I'm really interested to see if they ever release the B1K component of this, because it's intriguingly sweet and creamy in this iteration.

This has a very soft mouthfeel to it, creamy and rich, but not too thick, with a lower level of carbonation. It's definitely an enjoyable slow sipper.

Blah blah, Hill Farmstead is great, tell me something I don't know!

Look: Motor oil black with thin khaki head that recedes immediately. Has low carbonation.
Smell: Chocolate, marshmallows, molasses, and a little oak.
Taste: Chocolate, Licorice, marshmallows, faint honey, with a touch of oak.
Mouthfeel: On the thinner side. Silky smooth.
Overall: A good blend, but not much Barrel on this one.
