Notes / Commercial Description:
We're pleased to release a new entry in our series of Flora variants with locally provided fruits: Flora aged on blueberries, black currants, raspberries and cherries. Flora is the wine barrel-aged version of Florence (1915-1967), our grandfather's sister as well as the name of our Farmstead® wheat ale. Only a few barrels were selected, and that beer was aged further on a blend of fresh, hand-picked berries from Greensboro, East Hardwick, and Elmore.

375 mL bottle. Bright red body with a pink head. Smells of mostly fruit. Currant, blueberry. I get blackberry, but I know that's not one of them. A little wine. Tastes of blueberries up front, then currant, then raspberry. Wine and oak. Dries out and drops off at the end leaving a hint of cherry, but not a lot. Light body. It's mostly fruit and Flora is kinda missing.

375ml bottle, bottled November of 2017, poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass.

The beer pours a bright beet red color, ruby and garnet hues, light cloudiness with a slim finger of pinkish head that has minimal retention and no substantive lacing. The aroma is nice, plenty of jammy fruit, bright and tart berries, pitted tart cherry with a bit of earthy blueberry skin, moderate funk, a bit of heavily charred oak barrel, lemon peel and mineral water. The flavors are good, the fruit is nicely expressed, lots of cherry and tart currants, the blueberry has an earthy seediness, tart and jammy fruits, very fresh and bright with a soft vinous acidity and oak barrel that doesn’t offer the harshness found the aroma with some funk and mineral water at the finish. The mouthfeel is good, coating yet lively and crisp, bubbly medium body and a dry finish.

Verdict: A good fruited saison from Hill Farmstead. By no means my favorite variant of Flora, but the jammy qualities are so rewarding. The balance feels a bit off and the nose has an odd charred or smokey odor that isn’t too pleasant but despite that, this is a solid beer, bright and refreshing.

The beer pours a pink with no head. It has medium carbonation. It smells of jammy raspberry, cherry, lacto, with subtle whine. The beer tastes lightly tart, with jammy raspberry, cherry, lacto, and subtle whine. The mouthfeel is light and thin with a dry finish. Not a big fan of this beer, thin and not a lot of flavor. Wondering if something went wrong, the carbonation is very low.

This one pours a light reddish-pinkish, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This is a fruit explosion here- there's a lot going here. The fruits I get most strongly are cherry and raspberry, with just the slightest currant hint, and not much blueberry. The fruit is the only thing I really get in the aroma.

The fruit flavor is really, really well expressed here, but I do kind of get the feeling that there's too much fruit, and the flavors that make Flora...well, Flora are kind of lost. I wouldn't really know it's a wine-barrel aged saison, just a really good fruited wild ale. Though this is undeniably delicious, I expect a bit more subtlety and balance from Hill Farmstead.

This is light bodied, crisp and clean, with a very high level of drinkability.

I liked this one a lot, but I don't think it's in the upper echelon for Hill Farmstead beers.
