Flora PearFlora Pear
Notes: Flora is the wine barrel-aged version of Florence (1915-1967), our grandfather's sister as well as the name of our Farmstead® wheat ale. We selected several barrels of Flora and aged it atop organic pears, including a selection of dessert pears (Stacey, Summercrisp, Luscious and Nova) as well as Siberian pears—all from Elmore Roots Nursery in nearby Elmore, Vt. Soft, subtle fruit notes and a delicate golden hue marry with Flora's singular elegance to embody and exemplify the elements from which it was crafted.

Poured from the 2018 harvest, 375 ml bottle into the test glass.
A - Superb clarity, you can watch the Champagne style carbonation dance its way topside all day. On the initial pour a thin white cap formed and mophed into one ring to bind them all.
S - Floral and expressive, with ripe pear skin, riding the waves of white burgundy, grape skin, oak tannin, a kiss of sulphur, and chalk. Lemon grass is sublte, with a lovely white pepper kiss.
T - So complex, with ripe fruit, pear, green grape, leading the way, then lovely mineral threads meet up with barrel notes light oak and the slightest tannins. Mixed cultures and house yeast put the HFB thumbprint squarely on the offering, showing a bit of tart that accentuates the lovely pear element. Make no mistake this is Flora first with the fruit acting in a support role. As it warms the wine like elements recede and nice light grain character steps up for a quick appearance.
M - Tart start, quickly balances against a rich dusty mineral wave, rushed out by semi sweet fruit threads, quickly rushed out out with a vinous push out the door. the finish is farmhouse and a bit funky, ashen dry in the best way. All that in a split second it seems.
O - A very special variant of a very special beer. Of the fruited versions this is my favorite. Never leaving the base Flora, the pears add a layer of complexity, some fleshy fruit skin threads, on top of an elegantly expressed Barrel treated largely wheat saison. As contradictory as it may sound.
Simply a Masterpiece

There are beers that blow my mind and then there are beers that make me rethink what amazing beer can be. This is the latter, and there are very few in that category for me. In terms of the technical merits, it looks the part with its slightly hazy, straw-colored body. And it has the right mouth being tart but not unbearably sour. The carb is on point but just a bit sharp (I'm nitpicking). But what sets this beer apart is the aroma and the complex flavors. I have had a lot of beer (nearly 1,000 logged on here alone thousands more beyond that), but I have never seen fruit integrated this well. And the fact that it's pears?! This is pure alchemy. The nose bursts with pear aromas, backed by nice funk and earthy tones. Pear isn't absent in the flavor either, anything but. But there are also great saison malt characteristics along with wine and wood layers. This is so f#cking good!

Vibrant almost neon yellow-orange with a loud fizzy white head quickly fizzling out to nothing.

Tart and cleanly beautiful farmhouse funk features loads of pear and apple, both the flesh and the peel, with a complexity that even simulates apricot. Unique white wine-like oak is bright yet exhibits some welcome age. The tingly crisp body has a semi-dry finish.

Wow this is amazing. Impossible to explain, yet easy to thoroughly enjoy.

Pours a straw color with minimal head. Pear, hay, delicate and traditional HF nose. Taste follows with great pear with some lemon tart, HF well water. Feel is light medium with nice effervescence. Overall, dang! Great pear character with traditional flora and HF character, and greatly balanced acid

Bottle: Poured a clear yellow color ale with a nice white foamy head. Aroma of acidic notes with some funky yeast and clear pear notes. Taste is also a mix of pear notes with some acidic and funky yeast notes and limited sugar notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. I liked how the pear was offsetting some of the acidity on the base beer.

375 mL bottle. Lightly hazy golden. Strong pear aroma. A little wine. Tastes of tart pears. White wine. More pear throughout. Light body and crisp. I didn't expect it, but it's 90% pear. Even gives the mouthfeel of eating a pear.

Pours gold with a slight haze, a baby finger of head, tiny specs of lace. Aroma of pear, wheat, slight funk. Aroma and taste really opens as this warms up:. Young pear, wheat, white wine, oak, light barnyard funk. Lighter body.

Poured out as a yellowish gold color with a thin white head on top. The smell of the beer has a boat load of pear aroma that blends really well with the subtle funk that is in there too. The taste of the beer has a pretty good balance of pear and funk. The feel is light to medium bodied with a decent carbonation to it. Overall I found it impressive that the pear aspects of the beer was as forward as they were, I enjoyed it and I wish more beers with pear would be more like this one.

375ml bottle poured into a HF oversized wine glass

A- pours a clear golden color with a one-finger foamy white head that reduces to a ring around the edge

S- plenty of ripe pear on the nose, with undertones of earthy yeast that adds aromas of white pepper, dried hay, basement must & some phenolic notes

T- slightly tart juicy pear starts it out, along with complimenting notes of white wine. Mid-palate brings out some oaky undertones along with more pear. The finish adds some peppery yeast, adding notes of hay, lemongrass and light phenolic notes on the linger

M- medium-light body with medium bubbly carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a semi-dry finish

O- subtle yet refined, the juicy pear is prominent and lasts long after the finish, so easy to drink and perfect for a hot day
