750ml growler, freshly filled, poured into an oversized Hill Farmstead wine glass.

The beer pours a cloudy and lightly hazy orange color, soft amber and honey hues with a foamy white head, rises about two fingers tall with great retention and excellent swatches of soapy lace. The aroma is wonderful, tons of juicy tropical fruits, bright and fragrant with mango and passionfruit with underlying white grape, light rye like spice, bright floral bouquet, a bit of citrus peel with some dank grassiness and a doughy palt malt bill with a nice mineral water character. The flavors are excellent, expressive, bright, delicate, tons of juicy tropical fruit, soft mango, bright peach, white grape, dank grassiness, citrus zest, bitter pine and a nice spicy hop character with a mineral water and doughy pale grain finish. The mouthfeel is great, thick full body, coating and lively with a hearty texture that finishes with a dry bitter kick.

Verdict: An excellent IPA from Hill Farmstead. Double Nelson was one of my favorites from the past year or so but this is right up there. A bit less explosive, but packs all the same flavors into a really clean and expressive IPA. Balanced, juicy, bursting with flavor, just a top notch beer.

This one pours a fairly hazy dark orange color, with a big fluffy head, and lots of lacing.

There's a big helping of juicy tropical stuff on the nose, maybe some mango, and that sort of dank white grape skin thing I get from a lot of Nelson beers. There's also some light grassiness on then nose too.

The taste is basically the same, with a big tropical blast dominating the proceedings here, and a little bit of that light grape sweetness that is so characteristic of beers with lot of Nelson. There's a solid grassy freshness on the finish, providing some bitterness. HF hoppy beers always have the perfect amount of bitterness for me.

This is light, almost like drinking a juicy cloud, with a good level of carbonation and a high level of drinkability.

I've now tried all of the different Nelson single hop beers that HF has done. I think this is better than the pale ale, but not quite to the level of Double Nelson.

12oz Can

Big ol' thanks to Greezy Dave for this one! He's OK. Nelson is a juice looking beer. Not in that sense of those overly thick, viscous pieces of nonsense but in the sense of bright orange apricot and pineapple with a decent haze throughout. The foam is the purest of whites and easily forms a finger high on the pour. The head leaves behind sticky, coating, delicate sheet lacing.

Well now, that beer smells pretty good. This guy manages to pull out the full spectrum of Nelson. There's a good sharp cheesiness off the bat that I always get from Nelson with a softly dank middle. Musty white grapes add to that dankness. A smattering of indistinguishable tropical fruits wraps it up, fruit salad like. A little green which in this case adds to the tropical character. The malt base is pretty nonexistent.

That sharp Parmesan rind and middling dankness open this beer up in a big way. Both of which are bright, somehow. It a little chalky and dewey in the middle with that grape must picking up quite a bit. Ripe pineapple and underripe mango wrap it up. That green mango brings about some spicy character. For a single hopped beer this thing brings the depth and it's all vibrant.

This guy sits a tick below moderate in weight with a fairly active effervescence. It's got a light feel and it's fairly crisp, to be honest. The finish is a little chalky with an immediate dryness. I can get behind that dryness. Nelson brings about a sturdy bitterness as well, which I can also get behind. This beer, it's drinkable as hell.

Nelson is a winner from the Hill Farmstead bunch. It takes all the essence of Nelson and spreads it out to ensure total saturation. It's funky and tropical, sharp and bitter, delicious. I would drink this one often. Thanks again, Dave!

12 oz can poured into a nonic pint glass canned on 10/01

A: Small tight creamy looking white head that coats the glass as it dissipates. The body is a cloudy murky gold tan color.

S: Cantaloupes, grape, light grass, and some cracker malts.

T: Honeydew, cantaloupe, a little peach, with some light grass and lemon undertones.

M: Medium bodied lowish carbonation and low bitterness.

O: This is really good. I’m not sure I’d want a ton of it but it’s quite good.

Best IPA of the hill farmstead offering. More savory then there other IPAs. Nelson Hops are terrific in this American IPA. Solid offering, one of the best IPA

On tap. Looks like a Hill Farmstead offering. Aroma is very fruity but the complexity of Nelson hops seems a bit different. Flavor is similar. It tastes to me less like a Nelson single hop or Nelson dominant beer (don’t know if this is the only hop). Elements of my favorite hop are blatantly there but I have seen better showcases than this. I liked the pale ale version better. Still yummy.
