Flora is the wine barrel-aged version of Florence (1915-1967), our grandfather's sister as well as the name of our Farmstead® wheat ale. We selected a single barrel of Flora and aged it on fresh, Vermont-grown pawpaw; rowan berries; cherry crabapples; and gooseberries.

375ml bottle, bottle date is March 29, 2018, poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass.
The beer poured a bright golden color, honey hues with a cloudy and lightly hazy complexion that sports a thin white head that offers no retention and no lacing. The aroma is wonderful, lots of paw paw fruit and tart gooseberry, citrus peel, soft oak with a soft white wine grape and vinous acid quality that brings out a soft pale grain and mineral water. The flavors are excellent, soft grains and a light spicy yeast that brings out a really delicate funk profile that really highlights the tart and tangy gooseberries and brings out the juicy paw paw and citrus qualities with a bit of bitter crabapple that finishes with musty oak that's vinous and earthy and offers a bit of bright grape. The mouthfeel is good, lively medium body, coating and vibrant with a tart and dry finish.
Verdict: An excellent fruited Flora variant from hill Farmstead. The paw paw is juicy and rich with a great counterbalance of tart crabapple and gooseberry. The funk and barrel character is well developed and offers more layers of complexity but keeps a great sense of balance.
