Hill Farmstead Brewery
Vermont, United States

Notes: Limited (brewed once) availibility. Flora is the wine barrel-aged version of Florence, our grandfather's sister as well as the name of our Farmstead wheat ale. We selected two barrels of Flora and aged it atop fresh blueberries from Greensboro, Vt., and raspberries from Shelburne, Vt.

375ml bottle, bottle dated October 12, 2018, poured into a black Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass.

The beer pours a bright ruby and blood red color, thick and cloudy with a pinkish colored head that rises about a finger high and has good retention with no lacing. The aroma is okay, dirty funk, lemon peel, raspberry skin, musty oak and a prominent wine character that is a bit smokey, charred wood and has some "bandaid" character. The flavors are good, lots of berry skin, both blueberry and raspberry preserve, harsher "bandaid" plastic like flavor, a bit of smoke, oaky and vinous with a nice funk profile. The mouthfeel is good, coating, creamy, smooth but lively body that has a tart and dry finish.

Verdict: A good fruited Flora, has a bit of a smokey and plastic like quality that is very distracting and hurts the balance of this beer. There is a good jamminess and the two berries are distinct and complimentary but it fails to achieve its ambitions.
