Notes: Edward (1917-2002) is our grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his five children. In his honor, this American Pale Ale is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Edward’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, with impressions of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Edward.

85 IBU

Pale and Caramel malt; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; House Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

From a 4 day old 750ml flip top

It is a hazy, orange gold with an average sized off-white cap. It retains a solid ring around the glass that leaves some spotty lacing.

It smells a little earhty/musky, like it has citra or mosaic hops, but mostly like orange, peach, honeydew melon, lemongrass, and limestone.

It tastes even better than it smells. The flowery hops are what I imagine an orange blossom would taste like. Also a lot of peach, melon/cantelope, zesty grapefruit rind, and club cracker like malts before a subtle bitterness comes in. A bit of lingering pine sap, lemongrass, and mineral water. It is hard to describe, but I call this a perfectly clean beer. There are no flaws or off putting flavors.

It has depth, yet is so light and delicate. The body is soft feeling like a Gose, and finishes crisp and dry.

An outstanding beer that could be the picture definition of a pale ale.

Pours a hazed orange color with a white head. Aroma is piney and full of tropical fruits. The taste is also tropical, lots of pith, pine, pineapple, papaya. The taste is very fruity and hoppy. Nice pine, resin, mild tropical punch, light citrus. Refreshing take on a pale. Light body, light to medium carbonation, slightly drying hop finish. Overall, this is a great brew, thx to K0IZ for the pickup.

Great pour, heavy nose.
Appearance looks like a double. Good head but disappears within minutes.
Taste -floral notes with Piney finish but as it sits the pine gets lost.
One would think it has a higher abv it is only 5.2
Overall great beer excited to try more from this brewery.

On-tap at the Black Back.

a - Pale orange and a bit cloudy. Very little head or lace and the bar tender had to work hard to get any on it.

s - This beer smells pretty good. Resiny, tropical goodness. No alcohol, malt, or really anything else. Just hops.

t - Really just hops. Hardly any malt. Very one-dimensional. More citrus than the smell leads on. Maybe a hint of sweet, or is that just wateriness. Not bad if you like all hops. Something a little off though. Maybe burnt rubber or bandaid.

m - Low carbonation and very thin. Not sure if it is just really dry but there is really no body to this beer.

d - I guess if you are a di-hard hophead it might be drinkable but even then I think there is something unpleasent about it. Watery hop juice really.

People seem to love this beer and I've heard great things about Hill Farmstead. I look forward to trying some other Hill beers but this one really just didn't live up to the hype. What am I missing?

Considering I drove from New Mexico to Vermont to taste that 'awesome Vermont beer' I was quite let down to get served this in Brattlesboro. It was still a decent pale ale but I had been lead to believe differently, I hope the other Vermont beers I get to try are better or live up to their ratings more so. We'll see if this was an old keg or whatever OR if Vermonters like to pad the homeboys brews, the latter would be so disappointing.

Poured into a tulip. A moderately hazy amber-orange color with a one-finger white head. Berries, earthy notes, pine, and tangerine on the nose. The tangerine showed up first on the palate, followed by a nice blend of herbal flavors, resin, grass, oranges, pine, and mango. Medium-bodied and soft bitterness on the finish. Another exceptional beer from HF.
