Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Edward (1917-2002) is our grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his five children. In his honor, this American Pale Ale is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Edward’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, with impressions of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Edward.

85 IBU

Pale and Caramel malt; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; House Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Hill Farmstead Brewer "Edward"
on tap @ Hen of the Wood, Burlington, VT on 4 June 2016

Notes: Slightly hazy orange-gold or "peach" body beneath a creamy head of white foam. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma is hoppy with notes of citrus, grass, and pine over a delicate biscuity malt base. The flavor follows with a pleasant balance between the delicate malt, the moderate hops, and a solid bitterness. Hill Farmstead is all about the malt, and this one is no exception. It's not full in body, it's just medium, but the malt has a richness of character to it. They must be using a quality malt, and properly mashing and sparging, otherwise it wouldn't have the noticeable character that it does. And it's surprising, overall, that Hill Farmstead beers are so appreciated because, really, they go against the grain in today's beer society where bigger is always better, and even if it's smaller it should hit you over the head - Hill Farmstead beers don't do that. So what else of it? Just the balance I'd say. The malt is balanced, the hops are balanced, and the bitterness is balanced. It's very drinkable, which, I just thought of it, is exactly what Sierra Nevada is, what makes it great, and that's the originator so why not follow in their footsteps? Nicely done.

A: Arrived in a tulip glass at City Beer Hall in Albany. Body is a hazy straw-amber color with a small white head. Lots of lace on the glass as I work my way down.

S: Citrusy hops, mainly lemon and grapefruit

T: Follows the nose, with a lot of citrus hitting the palate right away. Lemons, grapefruit pith and even limes. Hint of earthy spice reminds me of rye at times. Modest bread doughy malt provides balance and a jumping off point for tthe citrusy hop characteristics. There's a lot of hop flavor packed into this APA.

M: It's a little on the thin side; carbonation is quite active and a little bit sharp. But I think that active carbonation actually enhances the flavor's vibrancy.

O: Quite good; reminds me of a session IPA in many ways, with a very light heft and feel but big time citrusy hops.

On draft at Hill Farmstead.

May be the best pale ale I've ever had. Deep yellow-orange hazy with feathery smooth foam-head. Packs an incredible amount of citrus orange flavor into a 5.2% abv brew. If I didn't know any, I would have guessed this is was a robust IPA and not a 'light' PA. Smooth and easy drinking finish. Something to be enjoyed all day.
