Notes / Commercial Description:
Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.

170 Theoretical IBU

Pale and Caramel Malt; Dextrose; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Poured from a 750mL growler into a tulip glass. Best by October 1, 2015 date so I'm a day late.

Still retains its carbonation judging by the frothy and creamy pale white head. Streaming carbonation reaffirms that. Copper-colored body showing excellent clarity. Lacing by the ton, think wild west brothel. 5

My, my, my. I know that smell. It's my favorite. Bright, popping sweet and mellow honeydew and canteloupe. I love this aroma. Reminds me of Yellow Rose, which I can't get enough of. I'd leave it at that because it's such a dominant and yet pleasant aroma, but to expand a bit, this has a bubblegum, floral quality and alluring sweetness. Hints of citrus. Beautiful. 4.5

While I immediately connected this beer to the Yellow Rose I love and adore as far as the aroma, the flavor diverges quite a bit. Sweet melon flavors, bubblegum and flowers carry on from the nose, but there's much more of a bitter, grapefruit peel flavor hitting my tongue. Light caramel notes squeak in front palate before the citrusy side of the beer make a forceful entrance. This is pretty remarkable. 4.5

Smooth, floral and mildly yeasty initially before the emergence of a more assertive zesty, tangy citrus feel. Smooth all around though. Creamy, minerally, and bitter. 4.25

What else to say? Damn good.

L: Hazy with a light orange glow. Soft billowy white head--similar to most HF ales.
S: Very nuanced smell until the beer warms a bit, then it's an explosion of citrus fruits.
T: Taste follows the smell. Very delicious citrus fruits, with a gentile pine bite.
F: Incredibly soft and way to easy to drink. Perfect carbonation and no booziness.
O: This is just an amazing beer. I don't think I can add much that hasn't already been said about this beer or the brewery.

Poured from a 1.5L growler into a HF stem glass. Shared with my hophead wife. Thanks to @Evilash for grabbing this for me over the weekend. Poured darker than I expected. Was expecting a cloudy haze of a beer in the grand NE tradition, but this beer bucks tradition in every way. Huge citrus on the nose, floral in taste, and that clean HF finish. There is a slight booze burn, but it adds depth to the beer. All in all, a wonderful experience- right there with the other VT IPAs and perhaps exceeding them.

HILL FARMSTEAD ABNER DIPA 9/23/15

Acquired from the brewery last Saturday. About the only one of the early Hill Farmstead releases I have not yet tried, perhaps because it's their highest rated on BA.

Poured from the 25.4 oz. growler into a Samuel Adams IPA glass.

a: Clear dark gold/amber with a huge two inch foamy white head which receded to rocky surface foam and dense lacing which hung on from the very top of the glass on down.

s: Moderate citrus.

t: Citrus with orange notes over a medium biscuit malt base and a balancing hop bite. Bitterness lingers a bit on the tongue. Rather high ABV is well hidden.

m: Medium, good body and no shortage of carbonation tingle.

o: A very fine DIPA distinguished by tasting at least 2% less than its reported ABV and relatively easy drinking as such. Been awhile since I had Ephraim but Abner certainly gives him a run.

Had this straight from the Hill Farmstead tap and man was it delicious! Orange/amber color, (amazing) mango/citrus smell, slightly boozy and overall just awesome beer. I could throw a few of these back for sure! If you can, definitely make the trip to the brewery in VT as it will be a memorable one. Cheers!
