Notes / Commercial Description:
Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.

170 Theoretical IBU

Pale and Caramel Malt; Dextrose; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Yields a completely hazed yellow-golden mango pulp color with a fluffy, stable white head.

Smells of a very intriguing hop plethora, with just the lightest note of cakey malts, perfectly complimenting to the orange quality of the hops. Also packs lime zest, wet grass a hint of dried blueberries and fresh fallen leaves.

Has a fantastic smooth, fuller bodied mouthfeel with a lively finish, never loosing any of its softness on the tongue. While turning remarkably dry, especially during the finish, the beer stays in perfect balance throughout, due to light white bread malts.

Shines from the very first moment by its world class mouthfeel, which is incredibly creamy and soft, slowly inviting fruity hops to the palate. Lemon pulp, orange peel and some unripe mango get amped up by a pleasant, adapting onion sharpness and soothing wet grass. Its only indication that this is an 8 abv beer is its doughy malt balance, which gets recognizable by rounding out the hop melange, providing just a hint of sweet maltiness - the beer drinks incredibly easy. Looses its fruitiness during late mid palate, slowly getting replaced by more silkness and an intense, long lasting lemon and leaf dryness, producing a short, earthy ginger peak.

Very impressive double ipa, gaining much of its greatness from the incredibly silk mouthfeel, while its perfectly hop composition does the rest. Awesome how this develops on the palate, turns from fruity to herbal to dry - always soothed by soft malts, very well pronounced and clean.

Visited the Hill Farmstead Brewery today and picked up a growler.

Color is lemonish and slightly cloudy. Lots of white head 3-4 fingers worth.

Citrus smell is fantastic with lemon, grapefruit and a little pine. It seems rather tropical.

Taste is great. I was expecting more of a fruity taste but there is some bitterness there too.

An extremely drinkable DIPA. I would not have guessed the ABV was 8%.

On tap at Whetstone Station

Appearance is golden yellow, slight haze with great lacing
Smell- fruit upfront with slight piney dankness on back end
Taste- Rock solid IPA, but back to back with Susan, preferred Susan more
Feel- very creamy, this is the beer's best feature.
Overall- While I thoroughly enjoyed this beer, I felt it did not live up to the hype. This is not same level at Tree House IPAS

Cloudy, yellow and lemony. Slightly see through when you hold it to the light. Topped with 3 fingers of lemon tinged, foamy white head. Amazingly fluffy lacing.

Smells of lemony, caramel, piney, citrusy, dankness. Sweet and floral, but tropical fruit present as well. Extreme balance. As it warms, vanilla and sugar emerge.

Wow. Sweet but citrusy, bitter, and grapefruit pith lingers on the tongue. Tropical fruit in a way that is subtle and bright.

Thick and juicy body, with a little sparkly carbonation. Amazingly smooth.

Got at Hill Farmstead today, Sept 28, 2016 in Greensboro, Vermont. Amazing, fantastic brew. The look, the smell, the taste, and the mouth feel all tie together flawlessly as though they are one frequency. Drinking near Ludlow, Vermont the same day I got it.

Filled while at HF into 750 growler, opened 2 days later. Kept cold the since growler was filled.

Beautiful deep hazy Amber appearance. Nose has a lot of complexity which also comes in the taste: floral, citrus and mild pine taste. Full, flavorful sticky mouthfeel.

A high tier DIPA. But I still prefer the HF Society & Solitude #8 DIPA which I also had filled at HF into 2L growler and had back-to-back .

Grabbed a 350mlm growler at the brewery. Ended up waiting almost 10 days before popping the top. A great blend of pine/citrus/and resin. This was a nice change from the "juice bombs" everyone is brewing now. Look is a nice light orange with moderate haze, leaving lines the glass. HF just nails the body and mouthfeel. For a highly hopped 8.2% DIPA this beer comes off as almost delicate. Such an incredibly balanced beer. Malt flavor is just strong enough to provide backbone for all the hops. So smooth and easy to drink. Amazing execution of this style.
