Notes / Commercial Description:
Earl (1911-1985) was our grandfather’s brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Stout is crafted from American malted barley, Flaked Oats, English roasted malts, American hops, Organic Guatemalan Coffee, our ale yeast, and water from our well. It is unfiltered and naturally carbonated. A silhouette of coffee and malt - an embodiment of complexity and drinkability, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Earl.

Pale, Caramel, and Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, Columbus hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

500ml bottle - dated 08/17/2015 - into a cool tulip. L: Deep black and opaque with a modest brown head which fades quickly leaving big bubbles and slight lacing. S: Coffee and sweet malt, of course, with floral, earthy notes. Smells like light rain on a hot sidewalk. T: Sweet-bitter malt right on top with lingering coffee and some dark chocolate, maybe some grape? earthy, minerals. F: smooth and creamy, slight, tight carbonation, slight mineral tang lingering on the tongue. O: I honestly tried to linger over this and savor it but it was so massively tasty I practically siphoned it down and had to open a second one to finish writing the review.

Nice coffee and chocolate aromas and the same on the palate.

Medium mouthfeel.

A: Pours a rich black with a nice one finger mocha colored head. Great lace down the glass after each sip.

S: A nice mix of coffee and dark chocolate. Just loads of freshly ground coffee in here. Just a trace of toffee sweetness in there as well.

T: This is pretty fantastic. Lots of freshly roasted coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt with some wet wood and espresso on the back. Just a touch of toasted marshmallow sweetness in there as well. Tons of roasty flavors without ever becoming overly bitter. This is really nicely done.

This black as midnight stout beer has a strong coffee aroma. A slight tannish head indicates the beers stoutness. Though it is a stout the mouthfeel is not overwhelming thick. It's thick but drinkable. The coffee flavor is more chocolatey than burnt or bitter. Though hints of burnt coffee peak through from time to time. It went very well with my portbello white bean burger at the Farmhouse Tap & Grill in Burlington VT.

On tap poured into an Allagash Tulip. Shaun can we get some more Hill Farmstead glassware in VT bars?

Pours a very nice super dark brown to almost black with a very thick and creamy dark brown fine head. Nose is sweet, coffee, malt, brown sugar, caramel.

Taste is just like the nose, coffee, chocolate, lotsa brown suga, it's a bit sharp and crisp. Really a good beer with a nice warm and thick mouthfeel. It's got a nice rich mouthfeel that's very tasty.

Bottle. Pours a thick, viscous, dark brown. Not much head. Looks like a double digit Imperial Stout. Aroma was of premium coffee, fudge, some dark fruit and vanilla. The flavor is great but what elevates the flavor is the intensity and fullness of the mouthfeel. Thick, syrupy, chewy flavors of chocolate syrup, fudge, coffee, molasses and burnt caramel. It also feel like a 14% beer. Very impressive. Unreal body to this beer. The flavor was just as advertised. This beer was very memorable.

On tap at Hill Farmstead in Greensboro Bend, VT.

Pours a very dark black, with a big mocha-colored head, and a bit lacing.

Smells very strongly of rich, creamy and nutty coffee, with tons of roasted malt.

There is a ton of roasted malt here, with roasted espresso bean flavor, some creamy chocolate, roasty bitterness. There's some vanilla-like flavors as well. One of the more bitter stouts I've had, it's really, really roasty.

Earl has a fairly thick body, with a low amount of carbonation, and a creamy and very rich mouthfeel.

Even though I didn't end up getting a growler of this, it was still amazingly tasty, with a very genuine coffee flavor.

Presentation: 64 oz. unmarked growler (all the swingtops were gone on the day I went unfortunately) poured into a pint glass. Split partially with a friend, but I enjoyed about two thirds of the growler myself.

Appearance: Dark brown to black in color. A nice two finger brown head rises up during the first pour. Plenty of carbonation here.

Aroma: Coffee beans, smoke, and dark chocolate notes all hit first. The coffee is pleasant and smooth with a slight char edge to it and it dominates the aroma. Everything is nicely balanced with the backing notes.

Taste: Big coffee notes upfront. The quality of the coffee is definitely noticable. Some smooth milk chocolate and raisin sweetness in the background. A balanced and smooth representation of the style that still packs a ton of flavor.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and medium bodied. I would definitely prefer this to be slightly creamier but it is by no means thin.

Overall, a really impressive coffee stout and the second beer from Hill Farmstead I've had that I thought was bordering on greatness, if not there already. Definitely thrilled I had a growler of this. Worth the effort to get.

Overall - not too heavy feel, I'd stick to only 1 a night drinking these.

One must compare this to classic oatmeal stouts, not the jumped up steroidal stouts that roam the land today, to appreciate the timeless brilliance of this. It's earthy, incredibly rich for the abv, smokey, dry, lingeringly bitter from hops (and, presumably, coffee), dense with chocolate, perfectly carbonated. The one weak link is the aroma which is rather muted though I honestly can't imagine this particular style ever being intensely aromatic.

Picked this up in a great trade with Evan! 2013 Vintage. Creamy pitch black pour with a gorgeous two finger caramel-colored head with great retention and crazy lacing. Big nutty, roasty nose with tons of fresh brewed coffee along with hints of oats, toast, espresso, toffee, burnt sugar, and subtle cocoa. The taste is also very coffee forward with tons of roasty malt, toasted oats, leather, tobacco, toffee, vanilla, espresso, and cocoa. The mouthfeel is creamy and mouth-coating with light carbonation, subtle sweetness, and a velvety smooth, dry, bitter finish. Overall, some of the most intense coffee flavor I've tasted in a coffee stout. Another great offering from Hill Farmstead.

Decided to split this with some friends when we got together to brew.

Earl pours a pitch black color with a brown head into my glass.

The aroma is full of bitter coffee but not too much of it.

The taste is rich with creamy bitter coffee flavors.

Mouthfeel has an oily texture with lingering creamy coffee notes.

Certainly one of the better local examples I've had of this type of beer. Wish I still had a growler full of it.

I tried this on tap at Hill Farmstead served in a stemmed glass.

The color is dark brown with translucent clarity and small tan head with average bead. The smell is very aromatic with coffee and cocoa aromas. The feel is great with plenty of roast yet not overdone or too bitter with a nice complimentary carbonation and sweetness.

The taste of the coffee is seamless with the malt and has a very nice cocoa-like flavor with some malt roastiness to keep pace with the coffee with a nice sweet taste like caramel in the finish. Overall I could not ask for much more - this beer delivers everything it advertises and more -an all around excellent oatmeal stout which is one of my favorite styles

A: Dark, dark, deep brown, with some slightly less dark brown around the edges - pours with a rich, creamy, medium-large mocha colored head, gradually fades to a wispy cap, keeps a medium sized collar and leaves a wall of spotty lacing

S: Beautiful coffee aromas backed up with chocolate and some burnt malts - really nice dark roast coffee, coffee beans, and some coffee grounds - roasty in general - lots of chocolate, which adds to a mocha-like aroma - dark chocolate, fudge, chocolate cake, brownies - dry, lightly burnt chocolate malts, with some caramel for depth - more sweetness than I expected, with some caramel, molasses, and toffee

T: It's dessert in a glass - every sip is is like a bite of some kind of mocha chip brownie ice cream - really nice coffee flavor, dark roast, touch of espresso flavor - tons of chocolate, with dark chocolate, milk chocolate, fudge, and brownies - oats and oatmeal - moderately sweet with some burnt sugar, raw sugar, molasses, caramel, and toffee - touch of vanilla - very roasty and lightly burnt, with not a ton of burnt bitterness - finishes somewhat dry with lingering chocolate malts

M: On the heavy side of medium, smooth and chewy thanks to the oats, medium carbonation

O: This is a dessert that I dream to share... actually no, this is hard to share

It's pretty hard to mess up a breakfast stout, as far as I'm concerned, as I am an absolute sucker for the style. Apparently it's also pretty hard for Hill Farmstead to produce anything that is less than stellar. If you take a look at my reviews, you'll see me swoon repeatedly over hoppy Hill Farmstead beers. But I think this is the first dark beer from HF that has truly surprised me. It's a little too sweet, but that is the only thing holding it back from legendary status.

The beer comes in a black color with a beautiful 1.5 finger fluffy brown head.

The aroma offers brown sugar sweetness, medium roasted coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, cappuccino, licorice.

The flavor follows with a medium to light roasted coffee with caramel and brown sugar coming through. Then onto a punchier roasted quality and an aggressive bitterness of anise, sambuca, licorice, earthy. The mouthfeel is creamy upfront as it fades onto the bitter finish.

A - Pours a very dark brown with a light brown head, very active with good retention.

S - Strong coffee, some oats and chocolate as well.

T - Nice coffee, the oats and subtle coffee come on just before the coffee gets bitter.

D - Medium body with decent carbonation.

O - Coffee, oats, all there. Not bitter or sweet. Decent.

To be honest I don't normally gravitate towards oatmeal in beers or for breakfast. If I hadn't sat next to a much more knowledgable HFarmstead person and started talking with him I would have not bought Earl at ALL. But he told me it didn't come around all that often so I bought some and am really glad I did after I just drank my first one tonight. Earl is just so smooth and full of compatible tastes to drink. And savor. Who ever you were who suggested I should consider getting some a hearty THANK YOU.

Big ups to @F2brewers for hooking me up w/ my first HF dark brew. Pretty darn stoked to break into this bad boy. Out of the bottle, the esteemed Mr. Hill is crushing it, his brew bursting with rich, completely un-acrid java, almost a touch of marshmellow, a certain bit of chocolate, and perhaps some other sweetness. This is a smell with dimension, with depth! Palate is a coffee bomb, through and through, the absolute star attraction. Some roasted malt slips through, perhaps a bit of char/ash. It's some legit bitterness, and I'm hard pressed to tell if it's the coffee, the acidity of the roasted malt, or a contribution of hops. Seriously, this is burly, aided and abetted by a nice, coating mouthfeel. Fair or not, the nose set the bar so darn high, I'm not sure the taste quite lived up to it, but I think that's more compliment to the former than critique of the latter. Overall, easily amongst the better coffee stouts I've had. Prob doesn't quite reach the pinnacle (Peche Mortel territory), but clearly a really, really well done coffee stout. Props, Mr. Hill.

a - Pours a dark brown, almost black color, with one inch of dark tan head and low to moderate carbonation. Looks very nice.

s - Smells of coffee, sweet chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, dark chocolate, espresso, cream, toasted malts, earthy notes, and burnt malts. Awesome nose; wonderful mix of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. I really like it.

t - Taste follows the nose pretty closely. Lots of roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cream, milk chocolate, caramel malts, and bitter burnt malts. Not quite as great as the nose and a little less coffee but still a great taste.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Smooth and no heat, easy to drink.

o - Overall a fantastic oatmeal stout; lots of coffee mixing nicely with chocolate and vanilla. Easy to drink, I'd love to have it again. highly recommended if you like coffee and/or oatmeal stouts.

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice thick creamy tan head that dies down slowly and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of roasted coffee, rich roasted malts, chocolate, some oats and faint vanilla.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a loads of roasted malts, coffee, an espresso bitterness, some chocolate, oats and very faint vanilla.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by great flavors and aromas. Shaun Hill truly is a world class brewer.

On tap at the brewery, nitro version, 25cl pour into their Willi becher glassware.

Look: Deep, near completely opaque, dark brown. Nitro pour, so cascading latte colored bubbles rising into tan creamy head. Layers of dark brown, deep tan, to light tan head slowly settles into the complete dark, dark brown.

Smell: Lots of roasted malts, big dark roasted bitter coffee aroma.

Taste: Get dark roasted coffee, a bit bitter, followed by the roasted malts. Smooths out nicely as it warms.

Feel: A fairly full body that remain light and easy drinking thanks to the nitro..

Overall: Rich and smooth, bold flavors, balanced.

Love Coffee Stout beers.

A-Jet black with about a two finger head.

S-Awesome roasted coffee with a small hints of Oats. I also get some really nice chocolate smell.

T-Really nice bitterness from the coffee with some strong cocoa taste. Nice creamy oat taste.

M-Medium body, nice carbonation and very creamy.

O-Very nice Stout. Not in the league of FBS or Double Shot from Tree House, but its very good.

On tap at Capone's today.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with excellent head retetion and considerable lacing. The nose is all CDA goodness (or black IPA goodness if you prefer), with a huge aroma of coffee and dry citrus. There's a hint of dark chocolate and vanilla as well, but the citrus and coffee dominate. The flavor profile replicates the nose, and I'm impressed by the amount of hoppy goodness I get on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit thin, but there's no denying the amount of flavor one gets. The finish is long and bitter, with the alcohol barely noticeable.

An excellent CDA/stout from the brewer at farmstead hill. While I don't believe Shaun Hill's ability as a brewer quite compares to the genius of Shawn Kelso at Barley Brown, he's awfully damn close. Just an excellent beer from Farmstead Hill.

Poured from a 750mL growler filled at the brewery last month. A little past the expiry but stored in the fridge until opening it today.

Pours a deep brown, nearly black body with a big frothy dark mocha colored head that reduces slowly and leaves foam with big bubbles in it.. some lacing. Beautiful pour.

Huge aromas of ground coffee, dark chocolate, some vanilla and caramel in the background.

Upfront I get light notes of coffee, milk chocolate, roasty malt. The follow through is really roasty, charred malt and heavily roasted coffee notes. Not too strong on the aftertaste. Somewhat watery, medium-low carbonation.

Overall a very enjoyable stout, pretty easy to drink and flavorful. Wish it was a little more rich and full bodied, but nonethless a good beer.

On tap at Blackback Pub in Waterbury. Served in a Hill Farmstead stem.

Pour: Really dark black, but not quite midnight. Two fingers of khaki foamy head form, and really leaves a thick coating on the glass.

Smell: Earl is like sticking you face into a bag of whole coffee beans. Very roasty, and even bitter on the nose. Some dark chocolate. A light cream and some oatmeal come through.

Taste: Bitter black, dark roasted coffee up front, followed by a mocha dark chocolate. A sweet bready oatmeal flavor balances the bitterness of the coffee. This is very in your face with coffee. Some light vanilla gives ways to more bitter roasted coffee beans on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Really nice a creamy, and would be supremely drinkable if not for the bitterness. Medium bodied.

Overall: This is a coffee lovers stout. Absolutely blows away Breakfast Stout in terms of in your face roasted coffee. Delicious.
