Notes / Commercial Description:
Earl (1911-1985) was our grandfather’s brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Stout is crafted from American malted barley, Flaked Oats, English roasted malts, American hops, Organic Guatemalan Coffee, our ale yeast, and water from our well. It is unfiltered and naturally carbonated. A silhouette of coffee and malt - an embodiment of complexity and drinkability, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Earl.

Pale, Caramel, and Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, Columbus hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

A - Pours a very dark brown with a light brown head, very active with good retention.

S - Strong coffee, some oats and chocolate as well.

T - Nice coffee, the oats and subtle coffee come on just before the coffee gets bitter.

D - Medium body with decent carbonation.

O - Coffee, oats, all there. Not bitter or sweet. Decent.

To be honest I don't normally gravitate towards oatmeal in beers or for breakfast. If I hadn't sat next to a much more knowledgable HFarmstead person and started talking with him I would have not bought Earl at ALL. But he told me it didn't come around all that often so I bought some and am really glad I did after I just drank my first one tonight. Earl is just so smooth and full of compatible tastes to drink. And savor. Who ever you were who suggested I should consider getting some a hearty THANK YOU.

Big ups to @F2brewers for hooking me up w/ my first HF dark brew. Pretty darn stoked to break into this bad boy. Out of the bottle, the esteemed Mr. Hill is crushing it, his brew bursting with rich, completely un-acrid java, almost a touch of marshmellow, a certain bit of chocolate, and perhaps some other sweetness. This is a smell with dimension, with depth! Palate is a coffee bomb, through and through, the absolute star attraction. Some roasted malt slips through, perhaps a bit of char/ash. It's some legit bitterness, and I'm hard pressed to tell if it's the coffee, the acidity of the roasted malt, or a contribution of hops. Seriously, this is burly, aided and abetted by a nice, coating mouthfeel. Fair or not, the nose set the bar so darn high, I'm not sure the taste quite lived up to it, but I think that's more compliment to the former than critique of the latter. Overall, easily amongst the better coffee stouts I've had. Prob doesn't quite reach the pinnacle (Peche Mortel territory), but clearly a really, really well done coffee stout. Props, Mr. Hill.

a - Pours a dark brown, almost black color, with one inch of dark tan head and low to moderate carbonation. Looks very nice.

s - Smells of coffee, sweet chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, dark chocolate, espresso, cream, toasted malts, earthy notes, and burnt malts. Awesome nose; wonderful mix of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. I really like it.

t - Taste follows the nose pretty closely. Lots of roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cream, milk chocolate, caramel malts, and bitter burnt malts. Not quite as great as the nose and a little less coffee but still a great taste.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Smooth and no heat, easy to drink.

o - Overall a fantastic oatmeal stout; lots of coffee mixing nicely with chocolate and vanilla. Easy to drink, I'd love to have it again. highly recommended if you like coffee and/or oatmeal stouts.

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice thick creamy tan head that dies down slowly and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of roasted coffee, rich roasted malts, chocolate, some oats and faint vanilla.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a loads of roasted malts, coffee, an espresso bitterness, some chocolate, oats and very faint vanilla.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by great flavors and aromas. Shaun Hill truly is a world class brewer.

On tap at the brewery, nitro version, 25cl pour into their Willi becher glassware.

Look: Deep, near completely opaque, dark brown. Nitro pour, so cascading latte colored bubbles rising into tan creamy head. Layers of dark brown, deep tan, to light tan head slowly settles into the complete dark, dark brown.

Smell: Lots of roasted malts, big dark roasted bitter coffee aroma.

Taste: Get dark roasted coffee, a bit bitter, followed by the roasted malts. Smooths out nicely as it warms.

Feel: A fairly full body that remain light and easy drinking thanks to the nitro..

Overall: Rich and smooth, bold flavors, balanced.

Love Coffee Stout beers.

A-Jet black with about a two finger head.

S-Awesome roasted coffee with a small hints of Oats. I also get some really nice chocolate smell.

T-Really nice bitterness from the coffee with some strong cocoa taste. Nice creamy oat taste.

M-Medium body, nice carbonation and very creamy.

O-Very nice Stout. Not in the league of FBS or Double Shot from Tree House, but its very good.

On tap at Capone's today.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with excellent head retetion and considerable lacing. The nose is all CDA goodness (or black IPA goodness if you prefer), with a huge aroma of coffee and dry citrus. There's a hint of dark chocolate and vanilla as well, but the citrus and coffee dominate. The flavor profile replicates the nose, and I'm impressed by the amount of hoppy goodness I get on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit thin, but there's no denying the amount of flavor one gets. The finish is long and bitter, with the alcohol barely noticeable.

An excellent CDA/stout from the brewer at farmstead hill. While I don't believe Shaun Hill's ability as a brewer quite compares to the genius of Shawn Kelso at Barley Brown, he's awfully damn close. Just an excellent beer from Farmstead Hill.

Poured from a 750mL growler filled at the brewery last month. A little past the expiry but stored in the fridge until opening it today.

Pours a deep brown, nearly black body with a big frothy dark mocha colored head that reduces slowly and leaves foam with big bubbles in it.. some lacing. Beautiful pour.

Huge aromas of ground coffee, dark chocolate, some vanilla and caramel in the background.

Upfront I get light notes of coffee, milk chocolate, roasty malt. The follow through is really roasty, charred malt and heavily roasted coffee notes. Not too strong on the aftertaste. Somewhat watery, medium-low carbonation.

Overall a very enjoyable stout, pretty easy to drink and flavorful. Wish it was a little more rich and full bodied, but nonethless a good beer.

On tap at Blackback Pub in Waterbury. Served in a Hill Farmstead stem.

Pour: Really dark black, but not quite midnight. Two fingers of khaki foamy head form, and really leaves a thick coating on the glass.

Smell: Earl is like sticking you face into a bag of whole coffee beans. Very roasty, and even bitter on the nose. Some dark chocolate. A light cream and some oatmeal come through.

Taste: Bitter black, dark roasted coffee up front, followed by a mocha dark chocolate. A sweet bready oatmeal flavor balances the bitterness of the coffee. This is very in your face with coffee. Some light vanilla gives ways to more bitter roasted coffee beans on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Really nice a creamy, and would be supremely drinkable if not for the bitterness. Medium bodied.

Overall: This is a coffee lovers stout. Absolutely blows away Breakfast Stout in terms of in your face roasted coffee. Delicious.

Thanks to Kyle for picking this one up for me. 22oz. growler poured into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours pitch black with a 1 finger fine mocha head with decent retention. Lacing is stringy and sparse with good stick. Thin oily legs. A good looking beer.

Nose is huge coffee and mocha notes. Like a man made of coffee beans took a crap and it got put in a beer. Incredible. Very aromatic.

Opens chocolate and mocha. Dank coffee beans towards the middle with milk and dark chocolate in the finish. Some fudginess lends a mellow sweetness throughout. Aftertaste of coffee, lactose, and chocolate. Delicious.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Silky and smooth in the mouth and smooth, warm, and silky going down. Messy finish with a lingering aftertaste. Great body and super drinkable. Spot on as always.

Hill Farmstead just can't help but put up winner after winner. Earl is no different. Not the most complex brew but this beer delivers exactly what it intends to. Like smelling and drinking a mocha latte through and through. The body just serves to enhance the experience. One of the best in the style.

A: Poured from a growler into a HF glass. Body appears quite thick on the pour, viscous black with a half-finger brown head.

S: Nice malty stout nose, full of chocolate and coffee, with coffee slightly more dominant.

T: Roasted barley malt, chocolatey malt up front. Modest creaminess presumably from the oatmeal. Touch of earthy bitterness and coffee. Nice chocolate finish.

M: Medium-full in heft with good carbonation and a decently creamy feel.

O: Good stuff.

Black body with large white head with great retention and leaves thick lacing on the glass. Nose is coffee bomb, oats, and chocolate. Flavor is exactly the same, but nose is much more impressive and robust. Medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Creamy and silky body that is slightly thin as it warms up. Everett seems slightly thicker bodied than Earl does. Maybe the coffee thins thing out this stout. Not boozey at all. Really fantastic coffee beer by HF.

Black body with a big deep brown head almost like a nitro pour from the bottle. Nice light roast on the nose with hints of chocolate and maybe even some maple. Body is right there for an oatmeal stout if not hinting slightly toward a Belgian dry stout. Flavor is very nice and comforting. Coffee balanced with chocolate. Easy drinking for a stout and delivers what it says it will.

A - Deep black with no light and a small tan head. Pours like motor oil.

S - Firm but nice coffee with roasted malt notes and hints of cocoa.

T - Bold coffee flavors with subtler roasted malt flavors. Mostly dry but hints of sweetness. Great from start to finish. I might dial back the coffee a bit but it works.

M - Super creamy texture yet light and airy from the fine carbonation.

O - Very flavorful. Very good.

A-Black in the glass and while pouring. Two finger brown head that leaves nice lacing.

S-Roasted coffee, oats, vanilla, chocolate and roasted malt.

T-Good deal of coffee, some oats, good deal of vanilla as well. Chocolate as well. Some bitterness.

M-Lighter not much carbonation and somewhat watery.

O-Not a knockout like some other HF beers but Earl is still mighty tasty.

Growler purchased at brewery 4/9/16 and consumed 4/12/16. Poured into Guinness stout glass.

L: Midnight black, 3 finger head, lots of lacing and a cap
S: Very malt-forward, more traditional. Oats, roasted malt. Coffee present, but very muted and behind.
T: Follows nose. Lots of roasted malts and oats. Coffee is light and comes in on the finish.
F: Medium bodied, light carbonation, quite drinkable. Definitely something about that Hill Farmstead well water that is good. Solidly constructed.
O: Unspectacular, but rock solid. An oatmeal stout you can drink every day forever.

Poured into my Hill Farmstead stemmed tulip, as it should.

A dark chocolate colored rich creamy 1.5 finger head that fades fairly slowly with lots of lacing, over a pitch black beer with no light coming through, great appearance for a growler that's almost week old.

Nose brings some dark malts, a light milk chocolate and flaked oats, quite creamy, a little roast, etc. and despite all that no real acrid or char aroma. Then coffee, a little from possible roast, but more like fresh brewed and fresh roasted coffee, but not a ton. Also alittle caramel and fluffy nougat, as well as hints of light earthy hops, and just a touch of vanilla.

Taste starts with big fluffy malts, fluffy nougat flavors, caramel, a bit of milk chocolate and cocoa, etc. Then coffee, fresh roasted coffee beans like they steeped the beer right in the beans for a while, an earthy coffee that's slightly nutty and a little bitter but not a lot. Dark malts bring just a bit of bitter slightly charred flavor, but hardly acrid, and even seems to have a nice caffeine pick-me-up. A nice fluffy oatmeal center, creamy and rich with a nice nougat caramel touch to it, and hint of vanilla again, little bitter acrid char lingering as it moves to the finish. There are very light earthy hops with a touch of pine in there as well adding to the bitterness of the charred malts and coffee beans. The finish dries a bit but remains a little sweet, long lingering bitterness that doesn't get overpowering, in fact it's a nice bitterness, due to both light earthy piney hops and roasted char. Finish also coats the tongue a bit as the oats really stick there for a bit, and leave the light chocolate, bitter roast, vanilla, and a nice coffee bitterness and light roasted coffee beans.

Mouth is med to fulled bodied but quite rich and creamy, nice carb.

Overall quite nice, nice malt bill with creamy oats, little chocolate, caramel, nougat, and even hint of vanilla (not sure how, maybe just perceived from the oats and chocolate and coffee). The coffee is quite strong but not overpowering, nice coffee flavor that really comes through. The bitterness is nice too, a combination of roasted malts, light earthy piney hops, and roasted coffee beans. The only thing keeping this from being a great beer is that light bitter acrid char flavor that gets a little much at times. Otherwise very nice.

750ml to HFS sniffer glass

A: Dark dark brown with fluffy but small white to mocha head that fades to a thin lacing of mocha coloring, it is completely opaque but not the darkest stout I've seen still quite good.

S:lots of coffee and oats the smell is there but not pungent or even that strong. There is not much else there I can't smell the malt or hops at all.

T: upfront there is a solid coffee taste but it is not overpowering and well balanced with a nice sweet malt presence. The oats start to come in after the ential taste that blends with the taste of hops that balance out everything with there slight bitterness through the finish which also features the coffee flavor and the oat flavor.

M:it has a hop bite to it for a stout. It is also quite oily it is neither thick nor thin, but does have some chewiness to it though not toffee status

O: This is a pretty good coffee oatmeal stout not my favorite of the variety as WNB is definitely better imo but nonetheless this is a really good beer that I quite enjoyed as with pretty much all hill farmstead if you can get your hands on it do so.

2L growler to HF stemmed glass.

A- Pours a dark brown that appears pretty much jet black in the glass with about a finger of fairly dark creamy mocha head that has nice retention but slowly recedes to a thin layer leaving light lacing.

S- Roasted malts, rich espresso, dark chocolates, oatmeal cookies. Fairly aromatic with a nice rich pleasant smell like a coffee/oatmeal stout should have.

T- Coffee, roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, a bit of sweet oatmeal cookies, finishes with bitter chocolate and a rich lingering espresso taste. Chocolate is fairly bitter at first, but smoothens out as the beer warms.

M- Nice full-bodied feel, decent carbonation, very smooth and drinkable.

O- This was a fantastic coffee/oatmeal stout that is exactly what I expected from HF. I could easily drink this for breakfast. It is a little bit on the rich side, but other then that it is very easy to drink. I highly recommend trying this, definitely one of the better oatmeal stouts I've had.

Pours a very, very dark brown color with a good off-white head and some really nice lacing on the way down. The nose brings forward some really nice coffee along with some roast and earthy characteristics. A bit of chocolate in the background as well as some hops. The flavor has nice coffee character along with some roast. Chocolate throughout. Mouthfeel is really excellent and the oats come through. No noticeable booze. Really a fantastic stout.

L: brownish black with a dark tan head.
S: lots of roast coffee. Surprised there is so much given the age. Some bitter chocolate.
T: some coffee but less than the nose, Cacao, a bit of oattiness, very smooth
F: soft, medium body with a lingering tingle of effervescance.

Sampled on draft at Capone's.

Pours pitch black and comletely opaque without even the slightest trace of lifhtercolor when held to a light source and a one finger mocha colored head that slowly disappears leaving sporadic spots of lacing behind.

Slightly roasted coffee bean aroma with silky chocolate malt, oatmeal, toffee and hazelnut. It's very refreshing to encounter a coffee stut that doesn't smell like a burnt coffee bomb. I'm even picking up some slight citrus and earhy hops. I'm excited to drink this one.

Chewy full body with a great balance of roasted coffee bean, silky, luscious dark chocolate, oatmeal, toffee and bitter hops. Slight lactic character adds creaminess and fullness to the body and greatly increases the drinkabilitu. I'm actually surprised how well balanced this is. I was expected it to be more acrid and bitter even though the aroma didn't suggest that. Slight citrus and earthy pine hops add complexity. This is a very well crafted, extremely quaffable coffee beer. Not very extreme but damn good.
