Notes / Commercial Description:
Earl (1911-1985) was our grandfather’s brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Stout is crafted from American malted barley, Flaked Oats, English roasted malts, American hops, Organic Guatemalan Coffee, our ale yeast, and water from our well. It is unfiltered and naturally carbonated. A silhouette of coffee and malt - an embodiment of complexity and drinkability, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Earl.

Pale, Caramel, and Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, Columbus hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

This is one of the top 5 stouts I've ever had. Amazing flavor without the residual aftertaste I find with many stouts. huge coffee flavors. This is one of the few stouts I could drink over and over again.

Beautiful-looking beer - it was nearly opaque bark brown with a fairly large and pillowy light tan head. The foam settled slowly and reluctantly, but never completely. There was a lively mix of aromas, including milk chocolate, coffee, char, and dry roasty malt. Just a hint of floral hoppiness. The char and bitterness jumped out on the first sip, but faded enough to allow for the chocolate and roasted malt to appear. Coffee was more subtle but present throughout. I was left with a pleasant cigar aftertaste. The carbonation was on the high end for the style, but not too much. The feel was silky smooth and the body was somewhere between medium and full. Not surprisingly this was quite enjoyable!

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Label says Bottled: 12.2.16.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a full two fingers worth of tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Biscuity, milk chocolaty aroma with some mild medium roast coffee. Slightly sweet.

T- Great balance between big roasty flavors of malt and coffee and sweeter flavors of vanilla and milk sugar. Bitter roast lingers on the palate in the best of ways. Very smooth for the ABV.

M- The oats give a nice creamy feel to this beer while the bite of the roast complements it at the same time. Medium carbonation and a full body.

O- This is a great example of an assertively balanced beer. The coffee and dark roasted malt stand out while the oats provide an amount of softness to counter their bold flavors.

A 500ml bottle with a date that appears to read 12/8/16 poured in a 14oz. dailyware stout glass.

Look- Pours a medium thick dark brown leaving a mountainous three fingers of foam after a fairly conservative pour. It lingers forever along with some thick lacing.

Smell- Coffee, dark roast and chocolate along with a hint of char.

Taste- Coffee, bakers chocolate, molasses, dates, tobacco, leather and some mild char.

Feel- Oily and creamy with a mouth coating smoothness.

Overall- A big bodied roasty coffee stout that tastes bolder than the 7.2% abv., but yet has creamy slick feel that makes it extremely pleasant on the tongue. Must be the oats? A top notch and very satisfying stout. Thanks fellow BA jhavs for sending it my way!

Excellent head production and retention. Thick lacing.

Coffee on the nose, with sour red grapes, bitter cocoa, and char.

Incredibly smooth on the palate: chocolate and coffee, cream, molasses, and toffee. Slightly burnt bitterness on the finish, with notes of powdery cocoa and toffee. Just a touch of slightly sour dates and grapes, and a slight alcohol presence.

Smooth and creamy feel - classic HF. Borders on thick.

Appearance: black in color with a 1" head that creates some thick lacing during the session.

Smell: roasted malts are pleasant.

Taste: roasted malt, grainy dark bread, hits of chocolate, raisins, and a nice bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp to start, smoother at this finish.

Overall: a real satisfying stout that is full of flavor.

Nearly a black hue, excellent lacing with an off white colored head. Smell is of crisp roasted dark malt, hints of chocolate, cocoa powder, cigar smoke, leather. Taste is lacto forward chocolate, sweet roasted malt, and a subtle splash of coffee bitterness and grassiness in the back end. Soft on the palate, low carbonation and velvety.
