Brewed by:
Hill Farmstead Brewery
Vermont, United States

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Arthur (1922-2005) was our grandfather’s youngest brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Saison is crafted from American malted barley, American and European hops, our distinctive farmhouse yeast and water from our well. Unfiltered and naturally carbonated, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Arthur.

Slightly hazy straw color. Aroma has sweet citrus fruits like pomelo and some nice farmhouse funk. Taste starts tart with citrus fruits and also has floral yeast esters. Body is light and effervescent. A really nice farmhouse ale but not as special as I expected.

Poured into a tulip and consumed with a nice seafood dinner. The appearance is perfect..golden yellow, almost clear, tall white head with considerable lace. Smell is slight lemon and yeast, very nice. Taste is awesome, light fruitiness with slight spice, straw and bread. Mouthfeel is great...light body, pefect carbonation, soft and creamy. Overall, a perfect choice to go with the meal.

Great bitterness. I think this beer is balanced so well. Makes for an easy drinking beer. The tartness adds a great depth and dries the mouth just enough to make you want to go back for more.... really really quickly.

750 ml poured into a teku glass. Poured a pale yellow color with a huge white head that lingers for a while. Quite the hazy body. The smell is very citrus-y with lemons and yeast. The taste is fairly tart but I love that aspect of it. Has the citrus flavors as anticipated; lemons, hay, barnyard funk, low acidity, and little bit of yeast. The mouth feel is extremely crisp and clean with a lingering tartness. This could be my favorite Hill Farmstead "shelf" beer. Will be seeking out more bottles as this would be fantastic on a hot summer day, cheers!

On the nose i got tons of Green (sour) apples, with a funky kick, on the taste the apples were there along with that distinct funky/floral Hill farmstead yeast quality and a very satisfying sour finish. Very enjoyable Saison.

Was very happy to get my hands on a bottle for New Years Eve.
Poured into my Lost Abbey Teku.
A - Pours a hazy golden color with a massive foamy head that settles to a nice 1/2" head. Lacing stays on the glass for a long time.
S - The aroma is funky and lemony and floral.
T - Flavor follows the nose, and it is tart. Just the right amount.
M - The mouth feel is crisp, finish is dry. Certainly has quite a bit of carbonation but it does not adversely affect the beer.
O - Very drinkable farmhouse ale. Just tart enough but not overdone.

2015 750Ml bottle poured into a HF stemmed snifter.

It is a slightly hazy golden yellow. There is a very large dishsoap like, bright white head. It leaves some spotty lacing.

Smells funky and sour. I get Belgian yeast, lemon, floral hops, and some sweet fruit.

It is tart. Lots of lemon, some grapefruit rind, green grapes, some pear juice, and a slight flowery hop flavor and subtle bitterness.

Crisp, light bodied, and dry. Like a white white/chardonay.

This is not a style I am real into, but this is my favorite HF beer, and probably my favorite farmhouse.

I am generally just OK with this style beer but this is exceptional. So after scrafing down some of this on draft I wound up picking up about 10 bottles of this on my last visit and am STILL slowly reducing my "stash" for special friends or a "just because" moment. For me there is an overall "ness" to this beer that is special. Gosh, I've just talked myself into another one. Gotta wait until at least noon though.

Pours a golden yellow with a white head. Smells and flavors of lemon rind, pear, green grape, white wine, floral hops, wildflower honey, and white pepper spice. Slightly tart with a crisp yet smooth mouthfeel. Perfect for quaffing and sipping.

Cloudy pale body with a white creamy head. Nice refreshing citrus aroma. Taste is tons of citrus lemon. Very drinkable. I suppose it is similar to a sprite.

I think about this beer an unhealthy amount of the time.. My first Hill Farmstead brew. Sent to me by the legendary vtambrose. There's something so special about these guys. They take brewing to a whole new level of genuine understanding and thoughtful crafting. It's not just brewing - they're crafting stories with a beer.

Maybe I haven't had the right saisons yet... but this beer blew me to a new level of understanding of the style. I was so fixated on IIPAs for the longest time and now I realize that there are slightly tart and light saisons that rule out there. The complexity of this beer without the overwhelming sour just... made me appreciate the mild use of brett and the not over use of belgian yeast/sugar. I could drink this beer forever and be so happy. This is one of the few beers I will continue to seek out over and over again. I want to plan a trip to VT simply to visit the sacred grounds on which this beer was crafted.

750 mL into an oversized tulip. 7/22/15 bottle.

Gorgeous looking beer that has a hazy pilsner color body. Sudsy and laden with lace over the body. Lace is everywhere and in rings and islets and patches. The beer has a glow to it. Damn. 5

Immediately the smell makes me think of white wine. Elegant and light and floral. It's a profound vinous aroma that seems to go on for an eternity and contains some fruitiness buried within it. Tannins and oaks and tartness all come into play but in a quiet, humble way. 4.25

Tart fruitiness hits the tongue first and I think of unripened peach or apricot. Layers of white wine almost crescendo over this fruitiness and inject some funky flavor. The finish is downright incredible with a candied peach or peach sucker flavor. Also, the malt flavor here, when it does appear from time to time, is very pilsner or kolsch-like and I love that. 4.75

In classic Hill Farmstead fashion, this beer drinks mellow, smooth and understatedly in a way that is so pleasant on the tongue. Where many saisons suffer from harsh bitterness, yeastiness or carbonation, this is everything opposite. It's simply a tart, vinous and still creamy and lightly effervescent brew. Covers many bases and in the right way. 4.5

Marvelous brew. I won't beat the dead horse. Just exceptional.

Pours a bubbly pale straw yellow with pure white head. Has a tart aroma with an unripened pineapple note. Flavor is a little pineapple, a little salty and tart. This is a very complex beer and I really enjoyed it. Overall I can't wait to have it again!

This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a hazy straw yellow color. A two finger white foamy head started and dissipated in a filmy rocky sort of way leaving a spectacle of light lacing retaining to the glass. It eventually slides in to the rest of the beer.
The smell had a sweet grassy citrusy and tart lemon over light sweet grain.
The taste was moderately sweet with the grass and the tart blending nicely. A semi-dry biscuity malt collides into the aftertaste and leads into the finish.
The mouthfeel was about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability as the tartness isn't too harsh. There seems to be enough crisp and refreshing tones to allow this sessionable feel. Carbonation does play out accordingly.
Overall, another great beer from a great brewery. I'd have again and wouldn't mind putting it with its respected food.

Bottled 10/13/15

A: Hazy straw pour. Big effervescent white head. Quite decent head retention and spotty bits of lacing.

S: Lightly grassy with hints of citrus. Grainy, lightly bready malt. Very light hints of tartness (a little lemony I think).

T: Again with the grass and citrus rind up front. Tart citrus flavors. Wet hay and light biscuity malt. Finish has some burnt plastic. Aftertaste is quite dry and tart, evoking lemon peel for the most part. Some white pepper floating around in there too.

M: Medium bodied and smooth. Crisp and dry.

O: Nice tart and lightly funky saison. Great crisp bite and easy drinking for sure. I'm usually not a fan of the funky/tart saisons but this is one of the best.

A - Golden yellow, fully hazy, almost translucent, with a large white head, pretty sticky and lots of lacing.

S - Lemons, pepper, limestone, and the smell of fields.

T - Strong puckering lemon punch upfront, a touch spicy, with a close that hints at stones.

M - Prickly open, slick close.

O - A pretty traditional Saison. Well executed and tasty.

Poured from bottle.

Pours a pristine straw gold color with a puffy white head. There is some lemon zest on the nose along with some spicy, grassy notes. The beer is prickly up front, wet and smooth with a nice thirst quenching affect at the end. Taste upfront is lemon followed by a faint earthiness and finishes on a nice tart note.

Extremely pale, almost white when held to the light with a good amount of haze. The nose is reminiscent of pepper, yeasty esters, lemon and a tiny bit of sour. First sip on this beer was pretty amazing...definitely see what the Hill Farmstead fuss is about. Varying layers of light malt, tartness, breadiness. Excellent beer. Definitely on my short list of saisons.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a Hill Farmstead glass. Bottled 22 July 2015.
A: Clear, pale yellow with a churning, foamy head.
S: Smells lightly tart, of lemon peels and distant funk. Pleasing, mild, and moreish.
T/M: Oh, wow, that's delicious. It's like malted lemonade. Spritzy, citrusy, and lightly sweet -- grainy in a clean, pleasant way. The taste is long and fun, but the aftertaste has the faintest smack of something metallic-bitter.
O: A fantastically enjoyable beer that doesn't really taste like much of a saison. The funk that was semi-present on the nose is absent from the taste. Tart lemon, mild malty sweetness, and a crisp bitterness. Very well-balanced and well-made.

Admittedly biased against this general style, too much "saison-y" yeasty farmhouse-y ness, not enough tartness for my palate. Not quite my favorite HF offering, but I can at least objectively see that it's a solid beer.

The beer comes in a slightly hazy dark yellow color.

The aroma offers citrus bouquet of lime and lemon zest, hay, white bready malt, clean bathroom tilefunk.

The flavor follows with restrained grapefruit and lemon tart, white grape. A light bready malt, as the funk takes over funk eggs, bathroom cleaner, yet still being restrained. Hints of spicy hops to clean up the beer as the beer has wonderful carbonation and some minerality in the aftertaste.

One of the more funky of the shelf beers, but so balanced and refined, as expected.

The color of this Saison is beautiful. Cloudy/unfiltered golden color. The smell is misleading compared to the taste. The body and finish are smooth, with a touch of sourness.
