Twilight Of The IdolsTwilight Of The Idols
Notes: Twilight of the Idols is our winter porter. We brew Twilight each autumn, with a touch of locally roasted coffee and cinnamon, and age it on a blend of select vanilla beans. Originally conceived with a friend in 2009 while brewing in Denmark, the name of this annual release is inspired by the title of one of the last texts written by one of our philosophical idols, Friedrich Nietzsche.

Bottle: Poured a black color porter with a nice large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with nice floral coffee notes with some vanilla undertones. Taste is a great mix of vanilla undertones with some floral coffee notes with some light roasted malt and subtle residual sugar notes are also discernable. Body is about average but has a nice creamy texture with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very flavorful with great attenuation. Probably one of the best example of the style I’ve had the chance to drink.

500ml into snifter. About 3 months old

Pours black with huge foamy mocha head
lots of coffee and roast on the nose, but no sign of vanilla or cinnamon
more of the same on the palate - vanilla is completely AWOL. Ashy on the finish - too much black patent malt for my tastes
medium to lighter bodied given the ABV

Overall disappointing. When you tell me to expect vanilla, well... I expect some vanilla. nothing happening; not so much as a whiff.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Acquired as an extra in a trade!

A- The pour is translucent and brown, once in the glass it has an opaque black body with a thick, creamy 3" mocha colored head that reduces slowly.

S- Coffee, dark fruits, roasted malt, cinnamon, vanilla.

T- Starts off with some very heavy roasted malt flavors, transcends into notes of dark fruits, apples?, the finish is roasty coffee and fresh mocha-coffee-chocolate aftertaste.

M- Medium carbonation, medium body, slightly thin.

This is a beautifully crafted porter. Not thick enough that I'd consider it a stout, but hugely flavorful and complex.

550ml bottle poured into a Raleigh Beer Tasting snifter

A~ dark, pitch black. with minimal head.

S~ lots of dark malts, bitter dark chocolate, and figs with a little bit of coffee.

T~ pretty much follows the nose, more fresh coffe beans come out here. on the end theres a little vanilla bean as well. nice and dry with lots of sweetness.

M~ not too thick and not thin, really nice and smooth feel. dry on the finish.

O~ nice full flavor porter, definitely not my favorite porter but in my opinion its actually a nice mix of a stout and a porter. to me its still all about the pales/IPA's and saisons/wilds with HF!

Thoroughly ordinary and the perhaps the only sub par (or at par) HF beer I have had. For one, it is over carbonated so that takes quite a bit away from this beer. It is a porter alright and suffers from the excessive acidity that porters tend to have sometimes. Among the "spices" part, I get some vanilla and that is about it. Thin body and harsh feel, I found it tough to go through my sample.

500 ml bottle served in a CBS snifter. Fall/Winter 2012 vintage. Big thanks to Ivoutlawjlh for the extra. Thanks Jeremy!

A: Pours a nice obsidian color, very opaque, with a tan head forming on the pour. It recedes slowly to a thick ring and a small wispy film. Sheets of lace are left down the glass.

S: Roasty malts and cinnamon are present up front. Baker chocolate with a light vanilla bean that lingers around in the background. Some coffee cake sweetness as well.

T: Finely roasted malts, some coffee bean, and light cinnamon all up front. Toffee malts, some sweet crumb cake and with a little nuttiness on the finish.

M: Dry and roasted with a medium plus body. Medium carbonation. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

O: This was another excellent porter from HF. While enjoy Everett more, this was still a big winner in my book. Nicely hidden ABV and greatly nuanced flavors. Definitely recommend.

On-tap at Stoutfest 2013, Armsby Abbey. Served in a tulip glass.

Pour is black with about a half-finger of tan head. It retains as a mostly full cap leaving some good lace behind.

Solid, well-rounded scent with decent potency. Just about even distribution of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, with a good amount of spices and vanilla.

Taste follows suit nicely. The cinnamon is noticeable but nicely restrained and unique, definitely gives it a 'winter' feel. Cocoa and coffee are just about equal, with vanilla and roasted malts there as well.

Nice, full mouthfeel with highish carbonation. No alcohol, fitting for a highish-ABV porter.

This was quite good, a very stellar porter with a wintery twist - loved the amount of cinnamon used here, just the right amount - though one glass would be enough for me I think. More well-rounded and solid than the bourbon-barrel aged treatment (birth of Tragedy).
