Got this one from cparles a while back. Cheers man!

From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled February 2014

APPEARANCE: This one was a slow foamer upon opening. A clear black pour produces 2+ finger, looser, fizzy, foamy, light tan head with excellent retention. Black body with piles of carbonation all over the place. Very foamy head as well; it just doesn’t quit. Eventually the head fades to a thick foamy cap that leaves some chunky lacing on the glass. Very foamy and far too much carbonation but good color for the style.

SMELL: Oak, milk chocolate, light toffee, butterscotch, sweet cream and coconut on the nose. Mild but nice for sure.

TASTE: Wood, oak and toffee notes up front, then a harsh and spicy alcoholic swallow. Lots of alcohol on this one, then a bold and lingering finish of bourbon, some caramel and toffee sweetness, spicy alcohol flavors and a touch of sweet cream. Not much complexity really, and rather spicy and boozy. Light milk chocolate comes through later, but as it is, this is rather sweet and alcoholic.

PALATE: Slightly thinner body and higher levels of carbonation. Semi-creamy and a bit light on the palate, goes down okay with a scratch at the swallow and finishes slightly mouth coating. Some heat and burn lingers on the palate.

OVERALL: Too boozy and lacks complexity, unfortunately. The carbonation is far too active and it’s too foamy all around as well. A rather poor, below average offering from Hill Farmstead. Given how good their other porter and stout beers generally are, this is a massive disappointment. Avoid this one and wait until they produce something else of unnecessarily awesome world-class quality. Thanks again cparles! They can’t all be winners.

Appearance: Pours fudge brown with a nice cap; a decent amount of lacing lingers and the head retains well

Smell: Roasted tones and chocolate, with a smoky/peaty edge

Taste: Chocolate and roasty flavors, up front, with developing smoky/peaty elements; the oak and vanilla develop in the mid-palate but the finish is rather harsh

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Normally, I like what Bourbon barrels bring to a beer but in this case I think I prefer the base beer

Everett is so good on its own, so to my taste aging took away from the hops, masked it in bourbon... would take a fresh Everett growler any day over this although I was very glad to have tried. Wouldn't hesitate to drink again, but I prefer the fresh base beer.

Rather disappointing. I consider Everett to be about the best American porter our there. The BA version doesn't come close to the same level. I found it a bit sharp and woody, and noticeable thinner mouthfeel than the base beer.

From a bottle into a HFB glass to ring in the New Year. Pours a deep, rich black/brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is wonderful mix of the base Everett porter and the barrel character--smoke, chocolate, coffee, malt. Taste is fantastic. Simply put, one of the best beers I've ever had. Rich, complex with everything you'd expect from a top beer made better in a bourbon barrel. Easy to drink, and too soon finished.
