Enjoyed this out of a 750 mL swingtop "growler" courtesy of BA wuntrikpony. Bottle was filled 9/3 and is adorned with a tag marked "enjoy by 9/11/15"--lucky me, as it is 9/11 as I set to consume this. Very happy to get my hands on it, as I've not had any of HF's "hoppy" beers before and I do love me some Citra hops. Poured into a Speigelau IPA-specific glass.
Appearance (4.00) - Pours a cloudy tangerine orange hue that is fairly flat along the color spectrum. Down near the bottom of the glass, the shade takes on a "dirty" orange look, but that's to be expected from the shadow of the volume of liquid above it. Atop the body sits a finger of stark white head that has a mildly soapy look to it, but at a week out from bottling, we are probably at the edge of this beer being up to it's optimal standard. The head fades after a minute or two, leaving a ring around the edge of the glass and faint, intermittent film across the surface of the liquid. Some isolated dots of lace pepper the sides of the glass.
Smell (4.5) - A wonderfully fragrant bouquet of tropical fruit rises out of the glass, with notes of mango, cantaloupe and passionfruit dominating. There is some contrapuntal acidity taking the form of orange and grapefruit zest, but they only serve to offer the formality of a retort to the dominant argument coming from the tropical fruits. At this point, I get very little grain presence--just a touch of water cracker.
Taste (4.5) - Very similar to the aroma in being dominated by tropical fruits, with just faint hints of citrus and malt vying for attention. It's very good, and dangerously easy to drink--there is so little bitterness that at times it's easy to forget that you're drinking beer... in a good way. But I think this is where I run into problems with "bigger" beers like IPAs and DIPAs that rely solely on Citra--they are very delicious, but become monotonous. Perhaps it's because they are often so drinkable that I'm drinking them too fast and wearing out my palate, but whatever it is, I'm usually ready for something new by the end of the bottle. That said, this one was still remarkable, as I got through the full 750 ml before getting a bit tired of the taste. Still, I think this problem is a combination of the properties of Citra and my own palate, as HF has done an excellent job with this beer.
Mouthfeel (4.25) - Feel is on the light side of medium and the carbonation is moderate to low (although it's entirely possible that the carbonation is the result of consuming this from a growler after a week). Still, the body and carbonation were enough to carry the wonderful characteristics of the hop in question. Finish was slightly sweet.
Overall (4.5), a delicious beer and a great showcase of Citra. I'd love to find out someday what this one tastes like at the source, straight from the tap.

Can't say i was a fan of this one, too much punch without comfortable hop flavor, given the high rank, most think otherwise, but Hill Farmstead has many other more enjoyable for me than this blend.

A textbook citra showcase; aroma is orange marmalade, grapefruit zest, juicy tangerine and a hint of grass. Taste gives juicy tangerine and pulpy & zesty grapefruit, slightly grassy and just a hint of malty sweetness on the finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation, foamy mouthfeel turns into a creamy finish, high drinkability

Slightly malty, tropical hoppy, and a subtle orange citrus nose on this one! Taste follows with some sweet and floral orange citrus, malty-sweetness, a kiss of briny, minerality, and a subdued hoppy bitter finish. As this was canned on 4/18/23 (consumed on 6/7/23), I had this while it was a little long in the tooth...but, you can tell that this was absolutely fantastic when fresh. This is still well-made and delicious!
