Brewed by:
Hill Farmstead Brewery
Vermont, United States

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Clara (1906-1969) was our grandfather’s sister; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to her and her 13 siblings. In her honor, this Grisette is crafted from American malted barley, Vermont Organic Wheat, European and American hops, our distinctive farmhouse yeast and water from our well. Unfiltered and naturally carbonated, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Clara.

Pale Malt, Organic Vermont Wheat, American and European Hops, Ale Yeast, and our Well Water

A 5/18/17 dated 750ml bottle

It is a semi transparent gold with a thick, frothy white head that retains a solid ring around the glass.

It smells a little tart with some citrus and apple/pear like fruit and a bit of grain and limestone/mineral water.

A pretty sour apple, lemon, and grapefruit rind flavor. Some slightly funky yeast and straw/hay, with a little wheat, but not a lot of grain other than the lingering taste along with mineral water.

It is pretty crisp and well carbonated. Pretty dry finish. Not my favorite part, and not what I would call really refreshing.

Only my second "Grisette" version, but the Jackie O's was a lot better for me.

A: pours with a shining, clean, golden (leaning toward yellow) body, well attenuated and mostly clear, with a frothy, one-finger head that dissipates in fairly short order.
S: has a very zesty, aroma, most prominently a clean lemon, and some lactic sourness with hints of funk supporting it, with some grainy, husky notes as well, wish the nose was a tad stronger, but it's a small issue
T: immediately tart (with some apple character), but not painfully so, with a dry and grainy note bringing up the rear with some additional but subtle, notes of flaked oats
M: that distinctive Hill Farmstead mouthfeel, even when it is effervescent (this beer is decently effervescent, but not overly so) it is soft
O: Honestly, I prefer La Griseta from Oxbow when it comes to this admittedly vague style, but this beer is phenomenal, it's got presence, it feels real, right and natural, that's the best way to describe it which unfortunately doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

huge shout out and thank you to my friend for bringing a bottle of this back for me this summer. way cool man. this is a style i love, and so i was keen to crack this one yesterday afternoon. i hurriedly use a wine key to pop the cap, catch the glass rim, breck a chunk of it off, slice my thumb open, and the bottle gushes all over a just cleaned kitchen, an inauspicious beginning to say the least, but more blame on me than the brewery, save the gushing part. i finally get it into some glasses and admire its tall white head, but the body looks cloudy and thicker than i would have expected, even for the style, its quite dense, and golden wheaty colored, looks like a hefe. aroma is lightly wild and funky, clean bretty, champagne notes, the pale dry grains, and a nice juicy hop profile coming on too, tart at the most, minimally acidic, but quite complex. the flavor is nice, simple in ingredients but robust in nuance, the brett is awesome, drying like crazy, and floral too, i taste the oats and wheat better through the brett actually, which i think is the great success of this beer. it remains dry and well carbonated, but its not as delicate and sot of uplifted as i think it should be, and it bugs me its so dense and heavy for what it is. i know these grains can do that, but this should be almost airy in my opinion and it isnt. clean finish for what it is, some of the hops are there, and light orange and white grape with the funk at the end. very good beer, but not quite as dialed in as many of their other saison types. i brought it to share with a best friend at his wedding, and while we both enjoyed it, it lived up to the occasion more for its name and relative unavailability out here than it did for the liquid. thumb is fine if you were curious...

Light, crisp, dry. Poured from a 750ml. Lively, golden hued body with a soapy one-finger head. Effervescent and clean but not totally clear. Aroma of light citrus, dried grass, lemon zest and, even if I know I'm wrong, some of that distinct Belgian yeast. Seems like it, at least. Taste is right there with a balance of grains, citrus, tart with a bit of funk that I didn't get on the nose. Drinks crisp and clean and finishes dry as a bone. There's a slight metallic undertone beneath it all - maybe it's my reaction to the well water or barley; not sure but it's there. Regardless - an outstanding beer that brings both complexity and simplicity to the table in a ridiculously low ABV-beer.

From the 750 ml. bottle dated 05-15-17. Sampled on June 29, 2017.

This pours out an unfiltered foggy looking pale yellow under a long-lasting white foamy head.

The aroma has a hint of their wild yeast they use as well as a little wheat from the hayfield but the main thing I think I'm getting is citrus zest.

Medium or better body.

I sort of expected something more sour and tart but was pleasantly surprised that was not the case. I did get a mild sourdough toastiness along with citrus zest, grass, and a mild to moderate clean finish.
