George was our grandfather’s brother, and Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings.

Bottling date 8/17/15.

A: Rich dark brown with tight tan carbonation.
S: Dark and crystal malt with a slight sourness. Brown sugar.
T: A little lighter than expected but still full-flavor. Same malts as on the nose with a crisp bitterness throughout and heavy on the finish.
M: Slightly thin but velvety.
O: A great brown that likely should have been consumed fresher for full sugars. I usually prefer something with more body and crystal malt flavor.

This is an acceptable brown ale, as many brown ales usually. Not terribly complex, fairly large hop component to the flavor profile. Not super thick. Decent, but easily the worst HF beer

Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. Label says Bottled 03.30.16.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/2 inch light tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves large clots behind.

S- Great toasty malt aroma with some sweetness that brings to mind brown sugar, plain doughnuts and alcohol.

T- Biscuity, somewhat sweet malt character with some mild hop bitterness to balance. Very clean and easy drinking but there's flavor in every sip. The toastiness begins to border on roastiness but still stays within the boundaries of an American Brown Ale. Dark chocolate, a bit of char and a coffee aftertaste.

M- I always have difficulty with the mouthfeel of a brown because it's so mild and almost always about the same but this one has a sharpness that others don't have. Medium carbonation and a fullish body.

O- A very unique and complex brown ale and I never thought I'd say that about one. I'd almost call it an "Extreme Brown" because it stays within the parameters of the style but pushes it right to the edge. Highly recommended.

16.9 ox. bottle dated 3/30/16. Poured into Lawson's tulip glass.

L: Soapy 2F+ head with good retention, lacing, and a cap. Beer is a chocolate brown.

S: Chocolate and unsweetened cocoa, caramel, coffee, roasted grains.

T: Strong coffee and unsweetened cocoa up front, roasted grains and caramel malt take over midway through. It's good.

M: Light/medium body, light/medium carbonation. Pretty drinkable. Decent balance.

O: Definitely not one of my favorite styles, but I really like this one. As I always say, it's in the Hill Farmstead well water.
