I liked pretty much everything about this beer except the taste - it has a touch too much roastiness for me to appreciate in a brown ale.

Dark brown, almost black. One finger of head. Very present smell, lingers. Rich complex taste with a very long finish. Feel is rich, creamy, smooth. Excellent balance. Great beer.

500ml bottle poured into a globe.

A: Dark brown color. Fine-bubbled beige head settles quickly. Thin and wispy lacing.

S: Nutty, cocoa, crust, milk chocolate caramel chews. Some yeast. Earthy and vaguely herbal hops with a faint citrus spritz. Figs.

T: Chocolate caramel chews, nutty. Brown sugar. Roasty coffee and burnt crust soon come to dominate. Healthy hop dose brings earthy and herbal/leafy notes as well as vague citrus. Stiff hop bitterness. Grapefruit rind and citrusy bitterness on the finish.

M: Hefty medium body. Full, chewy, creamy, and with a sense of weight. Fine, prickling carbonation.

O: A big and bold brown ale. Lots of roasty coffee character from the malt and a good wallop of hops too. The heavy-handed hopping does wear on the palate a bit and contrasts pretty sharply with what the malt is doing though.

On tap at Armsby Abbey in Worcester, MA.

This one pours a rustic looking tawny brown, with a half inch head, and a lot of lacing.

Smells like chocolate, baked bread, roasted malt, and some toffee.

Not unsurprisingly, this is up there with the best brown ales I've ever had. It's really chocolatey and roasty, slightly earthy and smokey, with some mild toffee sweetness.

This is medium bodied, fairly creamy, but with a crisp finish.

This is probably the best straightforward brown ale that I've ever had.
