375ml bottle, 2016 vintage, poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass. Enjoyed on 4.12.17, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a beautiful jet black color, thick and viscous, oily and sludgey with a firm finger of khaki head, good retention and loads of soapy lace. The aroma is excellent, mild roast, lots of chocolate and a very impressive amount of stone fruit character, port wine shines well, mild vinous acidity, a bit of oak with lightly toasted grain with some licorice at the finish. The flavors are great, tons of dark chocolate, mild roast, dark grains with tons of stone fruits, port wine barrel, light counterbalancing acidity with some pleasant sweetness, chewy oak, licorice and anise at the finish. The mouthfeel is very good, coating, creamy, thick and chewy with a low level of carbonation but the heavy body does just fine without much in the way of bubbles and a warm but soft finish.

Verdict: A delicious stout from Hill Farmstead and perhaps my favorite take on Damon. The balance is very good and the nose is exceptional. The port wine character is right up my alley, really enjoyed this beer.

Poured into some HF stemware. Pitch black with nearly an inch of creamy head, a darker shade of tan. Lingers for quite a while, clinging to the glass with each sip. Really is a gorgeous beer. The nose is nice, but fairly subtle. Picking up the port treatment, some roasted malts, some dark chocolate notes as well. Taste is much bolder than the nose - port, roasted coffee, dark malts, some dark fruit flavors, bittersweet chocolate. Dry throughout, with a very slight fruity and tart tinge on the finish, especially as it warms. Really like what the port barrels have done here! Nice texture, creamy and coating in the mouth...lighter, but very adequate carbonation. Great beer, def recommended.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky black. Glass-staining. Big khaki head. Hefty collar.

Smell - Chocolate covered cherries. Vinous red wine. Dark roasted chocolate malts.

Taste - Not anywhere near as good. Red wine. Chalky and a little metallic. Intense roasted malts. Bitter coffee. Very chocolatey.

Mouthfeel - Overcarbonated. Boozy. Oaky.

Overall - The smell is quite outstanding, but the flavor doesn't follow suit. Really improves as it warms, though.
