Flora - Satsuma MandarinFlora - Satsuma Mandarin

Brewed by:
Hill Farmstead Brewery
Vermont, United States

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Farmstead wheat ale aged in oak barrels with satsuma mandarins. Flora is the wine barrel aged version of Florence (1915-1967), our grandfather’s sister as well as the name of our wheat farmhouse ale. In her honor, amidst the fleeting days of summer, we chose to fill French oak wine barrels with Florence and store it away. After many months, a Biere de Table emerged.

Split with JLindros and Ricky.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice lightly hazy straw hue, light cloudy lacing.

S - Aromas of flora, nice light wheat, sour funk notes.Nice barnyard.

T - Taste is nice and funky, good orange notes, sour and tart, light wheat, gentle puckering notes, orange is faint but there, super close to regular flora. Tart, citrus, sour saison.

M - Mouthfeel is very nice for the style, nice carbonation, crisp and tart.

O - Overall I was actually somewhat disappointed by this beer, in a sense that I dint get nearly as much orange as I would like. Even with those gripes though it is a delicious saison. Tasty.

I can't think of a better beer to celebrate my 45th birthday with. Flora has long beer my favorite Hill Farmstead saison and the addition of Satsuma Mandarins provide an additional complementing component to an already outstanding ale.

The beer is pale yellow with a slight haze. A vigorous initial pour produces a wispy white collar of foam and with each subsequent sip, a light Brussel's lace is deposited on the sides of my chalice.

Notes of lemon and tangerine are quite noticeable on the nose with bright floral backing.

The taste is citrus (tangerine, orange, lemon) with soft lightly spicy wheat. Minerally wine notes also float on the palate reminiscent of a Mosel Riesling.

Carbonation is light and soft - perfect with a refreshing moreish ale.

Overall this is superbly crafted and eminently drinkable libation.
