Dunkel

Pours a pretty brown and copper color with a small tight beige head. Head settles into a small ring around the glass.

The aroma is of brown bread and light bark. Subtle tea notes.

The taste has more of a bolder brown bread flavor. Nice toast. Tea like flavors round out the flavor profile.

The feel is light with fizzy carbonation. Balanced with a drying finish.

Would like to see some more robust flavors on this.

 

Dark body (brown to almost black) , thin tan head. Malty , roasty aroma. Very smooth taste , roasted malt , chocolate toffee with just the right amount of bitterness. On tap at a local pizzeria. A very good beer , my VonTrapp brewing favorite.

 

BEST BY 04/05/26. Poured into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint.

A: Burnished brown with 1-finger off-white foamy head with average retention and scraps of lacing.

S: Nutty, chocolate, cocoa, melanoidins, bread crust

T: Flavor is very nutty and melanoidin-rich without overdoing it. Dark bread and chocolate also easy to find. Herbal hop with heavier than expected bitterness.

M: Medium-bodied with even carbonation and finish.

O: Von Trapp Dunkel is a highly drinkable lager which pushes the malty melanoidin buttons.

Pours a clear amber/brown, mostly amber, plenty of foam, very good retention, and lacing.

Smell is caramel malt, slight nutty nose, toffee.

Taste is sweet caramel malt, light nutty notes, very little bitterness, light roasted malt. Good.

Medium bodied, I would drink this again if it was a fresher sample.

 

Observations after the entire contents of two twelve ounce cans were emptied into a clear glass liter mug. There was plenty of foam produced by the pours, a bit more than was expected from this style. It's off-white, maintaining just a little of the color of the liquid beneath. That is solidly brown, bright and although not nearly transparent, less opaque than anticipated. The aroma is faint, only a modest amount of malt and general hops are there for the nose. Its taste is pleasantly fuller than the nose predicted it would be. The malt is roasted just to the point it could become bitter. It does not. Bitterness is provided in a moderate dose by the hops, which aren't too piney, citrusy, nor resinous. They're just standardly bitter and flavorful. Overall, this is a fully flavored beverage, especially for a lager. It should also be acceptable to any reasonable ale lover. Although the glass lacing is below average, the mouthfeel isn't. Considering this is a lager, the taste is exceptionally richly complex and the mouthfeel is smooth, yet as light as a lager should be. There's almost a hint at smokiness. Nothing wrong here.

Pours a dark mahogany with ruby highlights and a tan head.

Malt bread herbal hops and toasted grain in the nose.

Toasted oats, roasted nuts and earthy undertones.

Pours medium brown with light amber edges and a two-finger off-white head.

Aromas of brown bread and grassy hops off the pour with some cocoa as it warms.

The taste is brown and black bread, cocoa, slight milk chocolate, some toffee and brown sugar. On the finish, earthy hop bitterness comes through to balance things out.

Medium-light bodied with fine but active carb gives a frothy feel.

Overall, nice and easy to drink Dunkel.

 

This is consistently one of my favorite beers. Very balanced.

Creamy, toffee aromas balance the bitterness of Munich malts in the roasted brown lager. Dark in color, medium in body and finishes dry and clean, resulting in a rich lager. If you can find it, I suggest you try it.

 

 

 

Dark malty bitter beers aren’t my thing, so keep that in mind with the ratings. Not very bitter and no lingering aftertaste. But the dark roast definitely comes though if that’s your thing. If someone handed me one though, I’d drink it.

Clear, mahogany color. Medium-sized, off-white head. Toasted malt, grain, and some cocoa in the aroma. Malty, moderately bitter taste. Classy dark lager.
