Trösten, translating to “comforting”, is a dark lager with rich notes of chestnut and toast. Carafa and smoked malts create rich flavors lingering on a surprisingly light, smooth finish. Brewed for the cold winter nights in Vermont, but can be enjoyed on any occasion.

An uncharacteristically decent offering by Von Crapp.

A seasonal winter brew, dark, rich, with notes of caramel and toffee.

Acceptable.

Pours an effervescent chestnut/mahogany with a thumb of tan head. Good head retention & lacing

S: Smokeyness, brown bread, some molasses & anise notes once warm

T: Brown bread, smokeyness, dryness & a touch of anise up front. A little caramel & brown sugar mixes in with the smokeyness & brown bread notes as this beer warms. Finishes dry, smokey & a little carob sweetness & a little bit of woody hops

MF: Medium body, restrained carbonation

Great take on the style, so easy to drink

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a dark brown color with a small head of tan foam. The head has a decent retention, fading over time and leaving a touch of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strong of a toasted and roasted malt smell mixed with some sweeter aromas of caramel and toffee. Along with these smells comes some grainy smells as well as a little bit of a dark fruit of raisin. There is a touch of smoke and a bit of char in there as well, rounding out the smell rather well.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweet and roasty flavor with the sweet being a mix of toffee, brown sugar, and caramel. There are notes of nut and some light cocoa upfront, with the nut getting a bit more intense as the taste advances. At the same time the sweet gets stronger as well, while the roastiness fades a bit. Some light char, smoke, and oak flavors develop more toward the end of the flavor transition on the tongue, and leave one with a moderately roasty and sweeter taste.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium in thickness and chewiness with a moderate carbonation level. For the dark nature mixed with the moderate abv, the feel is nice and makes for a nice sipper.
Overall – A rather decent dark lager with a bit more sweetness but a very easy drinking nature.

A fine Rauchbier.
Not too heavy on the smoke, with a nice clean finish.
Actually one of the few beers my son liked, and he doesn't yet like beer, he's a whiskey drinker. Don't worry, he's 25.
If you enjoy the rauchbier style, you'll love this.

Appearance: Well it's nice and dark with great amber hues. The head is frothy and beige and around two fingers thick.

Aroma: So wonderfully smokey. Vanilla, chocolate malt and roasted hop.

Taste: Straight away it's incredibly smooth on the pallet. Heavy smoke, vanilla with a milk sugar notes rounding it out.

Overall: This is definitely a buy again. It's such a treat to find this style. Prost.

Poured from a 12-oz can stamped “BEST 03/09/234, to a tulip glass at fridge temp.
Body is black and a small khaki head of mixed bubbles sits above and quickly fades to a glass hugging ring that laces with a full film that falls quickly by gravity.
Sniffs are full of raisin, caramel, and leaf mulch. Only after a swallow is there a hint of smoke.
Tasting brings dried plums and fig. It's not overly sweet or dry, but somewhere in the middle.
Carbonation seems a little high, and the viscosity is light, but still there is some tongue coating.
Overall, fine and drinkable. I’m at a loss to rate to style other than reading descriptions as this is my first Rauchbier.

10 oz pour at Frisco Taphouse in Crofton, MD. Appearance is medium brown with a moderate head. Aroma and flavor feature light smoked beechwood, hints of cocoa and coffee, and light roasty malts with some earthy/woodsy hops. Smooth, moderately-carbonated mouthfeel. Overall a restrained smoke presence makes this very drinkable.

Without a doubt the best von Trapp beer of all. Deep dark color, not too strong smoke aroma and very drinkable. Had it as part of a flight at von Trapps VT
