Our Maple Rauchbier is a tribute to the liquid gold created each spring in the von Trapp Family sugarhouse. A touch of Rauch malt is used to create the base layer of subtle smoke. A blend of Munich and Carafa malts gives this lager its deep hue and full-body, balanced with noble hops. The maple rounds out this lager perfectly.

16oz can purchased off the shelf as part of a 4-pack for $11.50 plus tax. No canned on date (this was released recently). It has a best by date of 07/24/23. It was probably canned on 01/24/23 or 02/24/23, so it's 1-2 months old. [I had originally posted this review erroneously under von Trapp - Maple Rauch on March 31, 2023.]

Look: Beautiful dark amber color. Nice clarity. There was a pretty cream-colored head that quickly dissipated.

Smell: Nice smoke aroma that is assertive yet not overpowering, along with notes of chestnuts and bready malt. Touch of spiciness and grassiness also. Subtle fruity notes. Also a bit of lager funk on the nose.

Taste: This is really delicious. It doesn't take like it's anywhere near 7.0% ABV. Up front, it has a very nice maple flavor without much maple sweetness. The finish has a touch of bitterness and lots of nutty, toasted malt character. Eventually, you almost forget that you are drinking a Rauchbier. It's super tasty and super drinkable.

Feel: The mouthfeel is medium bodied. Nicely carbonated. Very clean.

Overall: This is similar to Oxbow's Sap Haus, which I had almost two years ago. I remember that it was very good, but not enough else to compare to this one in detail. I think that the Sap Haus may have been more subtle on the smoke and a bit darker and had a richer body. In drinking this beer, I can't help but compare it to von Trapp's Trosten, which is a Smoked Dark Lager. While this is really good, I think that I prefer that one slightly more.

There is just not enough decent Rauch beers around. This Stowe Maple Rauch is top notch! I'm assuming that it is seasonal because I've been searching for it over the past few weeks, to no avail.

Great nice 'n smooth "rauch taste" and a sneeky ABV. Great for tailgating or enjoying one next to that upcoming pitfire.

Don't lose this one Stowe. Would kill to enjoy this on draft!
