So much vanilla with this beer. A lot of whiskey and oak. Some chocolate, but the vanilla dominates.

VIP pours a black color with a nice small tan head. The aroma is very earthy, with some noticeable of oak. The taste has a nice roasted malt backbone, some oaky flavors, and a noticeable but perfectly blended vanilla flavor. Okay body, great flavors; all the flavors blend together. Overall its a very drinkable, yet flavorful beer. Nice roasted flavors, and not overpowering vanilla.

Update on 4/22/16 - Contacted the brewery. If you have an empty bottle of this beer you can take it to their taproom to be exchanged for a different bottle. Will update again when a new bottle is tried.

Original review on 4/18/16 - Badly infected bottle. Unfortunate because I was really looking forward having this one. My bottle was a 2015 so please check to see if you've picked one of those up.

Received as an extra in trade from BA BottleCaps80. Enjoyed out of a brown 750 mL bottle with no dating on the label or bottle that I can find. Poured into a large snifter glass.

Appearance - An aggressive pour barely coaxes out a half finger of ecru colored foam that begins to dissipate immediately, settling as a thick ringlet of bubbles around the edge of the glass with a smattering of film and bubble islands across the surface of the liquid. One side of the ringlet has a collection of larger bubbles from the heavy pour. The liquid looks viscous and almost like motor oil, and leaves pretty much no lacing.

Smell - Rich with notes of roasted malt and sweet vanilla bean are the dominant profiles, but then subsequent inhalations of the beer reveal some subtly phenolic notes of booze as well as oak tannins. There are also some mostly hidden aromas in the form of toffee and creme brulee that contribute to the overall sweetness of the smell.

Taste - Like the smell, the taste is pretty sweet from the use of vanilla. It's not subtle at all--very much in your face, but in a good way, like freshly-scraped vanilla bean rather than vanilla extract. Here, the whiskey pokes it's head through a bit more than in the aroma, with a nice bite of wood and burnt caramel accompanying the phenols from the booze-infused barrels. The finish has a nice bittersweetness to it, reminiscent of melted baker's chocolate, with some roasty char from the malt as well.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied, especially for a BA beer, with moderate to low carbonation. Lingering aftertaste is bittersweet.

Overall, a really excellent beer that I'd love to have again. The vanilla is quite strong, but that ends up being a mark in it's favor, since it seems to blend well with the harsher components from the whiskey barrel aging. Glad to have tried this one and would love to sample some more stuff from Madhouse.

Got at Grand & Railroad Hy-Vee, $10 for a 750 ml bottle.

The description on the Facebook posts made this sound like a good beer so I went ahead and made the investment. I was not disappointed. This is one if the thickest and darkest beers I've ever seen, having the consistency of port wine. The aroma had plenty of dark malt and the vanilla. It tastes wonderful, with hints of toffee and the vanilla covering the dark malts and a miniscule level of hops. What surprised me was the mellowness of the whiskey element. It's barrel aged for six months so usually that produces a very noticeable whiskey taste, not so here. It's as if the whiskey is just used as a slight flavor enhancement, not like others where you might as well have a whiskey depth charge in your glass. Kudos to Mason and the crew for figuring this out, and hopefully future brews will aged to this effect. The whiskey is most noticeable on the belch.

Not sure what happened with this beer. Tried it at a fest and both brother-in-law and I found it not palatable.
