Had the cast iron oatmeal stout there along with a burger and some of their homemade chips. The food was great. Beer was great and the had a huge selection of on tap and bottled. Good vibe and it was nice out so we sat out and ate and watched tv. Overall great experience and will go back.

Stopped by on a visit to Columbia a while back. This is a nice beer bar. 24 tap that are mostly craft. A chalkboard displays key details like ABV and style. The food was pretty good. I enjoyed a nice greasy burger. Very friendly staff, too.

I've been able to visit here a couple times since it opened. It's located in the old Johnny’s Beanery location by The Sub Shop. Honestly, I had high hopes for the place but it seems like every time I go there, it my expectations go down hill a little. Originally, I was pretty stoked to hear a "taphouse" coming to CoMo, but after my first visit I was horribly disappointed. Even though they pride themselves on have 20 something taps but 10 have to be some sort of Macro or Macro wannabe. The service was bad and it was cramped and seemed like it was filled past capacity. After my first visit, I thought it was just opening jitters and I figured I would come back later and give it another whirl. Well, I’ve been back a couple times now and while its gotten better, its still not great. Their tap selection has gotten better but they still have tons of macros on and the craft that they carry are mostly Boulevard and Schlafly. While I like the local feel, I think its more for the name recognition of college kids then for a care for craft beer. The service has always been hit and miss. Once I had fantastic service even though the place was packed, the other couple times its been mediocre to horrible.

Really, if your friends want to go to a college bar and you want a better then average local craft, this is your place. Your friends can do car bombs and Bud Lights and you can enjoy a Schlafly Kolsch or Boulevard Singlewide.

Update: Craft selection is growing. Consistently more great beers.

So this is a new place in Columbia that opened in March of 2010. The "1839" in the name relates to the year that the University of Missouri opened. It has a college-bar feel but it is trying to specialize in some good beer. It looks like a typical sports bar but with a blend of beer memorabilia mixed in. It has a large patio area and bar that seats about 10. They have 24 tap handles. At the time I visited the tap were these: Bud Light, Bud, Coors Light, PBR, Blue Moon, Boulevard Wheat, Killian's, Magic Hat #9, Purple Haze, Dirty Bastard, Moose Drool, 312, Lagunitas IPA, Leinie 1888, Fat Tire, Guinness and Schlafly's APA, Summer Lager and Oatmeal Stout. Plus, they have two house ales brewed by Crown Valley in Ste Genevieve - an ale and pils. The ale was good and I had the Lagunitas IPA and Dirty Bastard, too. A friend had the Taphouse Pils and thought the line was dirty or maybe the beer wasn't good. He also tried their wings and enjoyed them. They only have wings and pizza on their menu. Overall, it was a nice beer drinking experiece. It is a good place to have a beer and talk.
