Very nice upgrade to the non-imperial versions. Big chocolate and cinnamon taste with a spicy pepper finish. The higher abv and barrel aging makes this beer one of better pepper/spiced stouts out there. Let it warm up for best taste

I picked up a bottle of Oddside's Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Mayan Mocha a couple months ago for $4.49 at The Lager Mill. I had a little sample of this last month, I liked it and I'm ready to give it a full review, so lets see how it goes. 2014 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks good, it goes well with the name and I think it's eye catching. It poured a nice black color that didn't really let any light come through and it had half a fingers worth of bubbly darker tan head that died down to a thin bubbly ring that eventually faded away and it left lots of small spotty lacing behind. This was a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a lower amount of high sweetness with some sweet roasted malts being the first to show up and they are followed by the bourbon barrels which impart more of a bourbon and light vanilla like aroma. Up next comes the chocolate which shows up nicely with some coffee showing up in the background and it makes for a nice mocha like aroma. Up next comes the spices with nutmeg and cinnamon sticking out the most with just a slight hot pepper like aroma showing up in the background. This beer had a great aroma and it fixed some of the flaws that were in the non imperial bourbon barrel version.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the sweet roasted malts being the first to show up and they are followed by bourbon barrels which are just a little lighter than they were in the aroma, but they impart the same nice aspects that they did in the aroma. Up next comes the chocolate and coffee with the chocolate still sticking out the most. Up next comes a slight alcohol flavor and it's followed by the spices with cinnamon seeming to stick out the most. On the finish there's some warming pepper flavors with some chocolate, spices and bourbon barrel showing up in the background. This is a very nice tasting beer, all the different flavors worked well with each other.

M- Smooth, pretty warming, a little crisp, on the thicker side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was good and better than the other barrel aged version, but it could still be a little thicker.

Overall I thought this was a very nice beer and i thought it was a pretty good example of a spiced Stout, it had more than a few different layers of flavors and they all seemed to work well with each other and it made for a pretty tasty beer. This beer had nice drinkability, it was smooth, pretty warming, a little crisp, not too filling and the taste did a nice job of holding my attention, but I think one would be my limit since I think the pepper heat would start to wear one me. What I like the most about this beer was the aroma, it was very nice and it was really complex. What I liked the least about this beer was that the pepper heat was just a little too strong and to me it hurt the drinkability a little. I would buy this again if they make it next year and I would recommend trying it, especially if you like mexican spiced stouts. All in all I enjoyed this beer and I thought it was the best variation of Mayan Mocha Stout I've had. I did a tasting with all three variations and this one was my favorite. So far it's one of the better Oddsides beers I've had and I think it's my favorite spiced stout. Good job guys this was a tasty and complex beer, keep up the hard work.

Nose is a nice cinnamony smell.
It's a spice beer, but, not spicy. Heat is minimal, in a good way. Taste, probably their best year ever. Think BA Mexican Cake Jr. Amazing brew!

A: darkness with very thin ring of carbonation bubbles around; cling well to the glass

S: Cinnamon right away, nutmeg and then spices follow. No coffee

T: Habanero and spices overtake everything. Base stout taste light in comparison. Still no coffee.

M: Looks like it's carbonated, but didn't feel it, nor did I detect the barrel aged character (again overwhelmed by the spice and pepper.) Base stout is so thin; I want to say it could be smooth like a milk stout, but since it's labelled as Imperial, I would stay with 'thin.'

O: A good take on this category of spiced beer, with Hunaphu and Abraxas and Mexican Cake, but not that level of sophistication just yet.

A bottle of this big dirty beast.

Cold my first impression is this is a bit messy. It gets a bit more balanced as it warms but it still is definitely a sipper. I get lots of fudgy, chocolately flavor with hints of bourbon barrel and the spices of a mexican hot chocolate drink. The peppers are not hot but seem to be taking away from the smoothness leading to a bit of a prickly heat that comes off as carbonation that does not work here. This beer is a bit of a mess and I'm ok with not coming back to it. Perhaps more enjoyable with some age to mellow out the rough edges.
