The further I got through this bottle
The lower my rating became. It brings the hazelnut in a big way - massive even, but it’s all too much. In my perfect world the barrel character is turned up 25% and the sugars cut
By the same margin. Sickly sweet and eventually Difficult to drink, perfect for a four ounce portion as a novelty dessert stout but Quickly wears out its welcome.

Craft beer is full of side shows. The inclusion of any ingredient imaginable has each of them trying to stand out among the crowded and freakish flavors. But Odd Side Ales is letting it all hang out with coffee, bourbon barrels and hazelnut.

Pouring a viscous black, like used motor oil, the rich Hazel's Nuts layers patiently into the glass, bringing a float of coffee creme to the surface. Hazelnut aromas are prominent with the very first pass of the nose. With a backdrop of coffee, chocolate, bourbon, caramel and vanilla, the overall scent of Nutella and Kahlua seem a fitting backup scent. Dessert-like sweetness wraps around the early palate with toffee, chocolate and a strong latte maltiness.

And as those sweetnesses spread onto the middle palate, the hazelnut flavors welcome the barrel nuances of vanilla, coconut and nougat for a soft but firm sweetness of condensed milk and chocolate. Its coffee spice brings a bold French roast character, allowing its heavy char to take an edge off of the sweetness. A shy bitterness also assists with balance before the simmering heat of bourbon continue to draw attention away from the sweetness. Nuances of marzipan and amaretto ebb and flow throughout the session.

Full bodied, creamy and lavish with a milkshake consistency, the stout extends long on the finish with those same Nutella and Kahlua flavors that were introduced early.

Pours near black dark brown with a thick but short lived mocha cap. Nice lacing. Aroma is fresh roasted mocha coffee forward with obvious hazelnut highlights. Flavor follows the nose, sweet dark chocolate, hazelnuts, vanilla and joined with a touch of bourbon. Feel is creamy smooth, lightly carbonated. Overall a fabulous beer. Dangerous sipper as the high abv is totally hidden.

Tasted in a snifter from draft at Consume on February 20, 2019. Coffee stout aged in bourbon barrels. Provides mouth watering vanilla, oak, whiskey, chocolate and espresso flavors along with toasted hazelnuts. Rich and pleasant on the tongue.

L - 1-finger mocha head atop a pitch black body.

S - tons of hazelnut, peanut butter, coffee, chocolate. Wow.

T - coffee and hazelnut are at the forefront, followed by chocolate, vanilla, and just a little bourbon. Low bitterness. Moderate-low sweetness. Low booziness.

F - medium body and carb.

O - the body isn’t quite there, but damn does this smell and taste good!

L-Pours thick...like motor oil almost...dark brown/black with some ruby highlights

S-Love the nice burst of hazelnuts on the aroma. A little chocolate, as well as coffee with creamer as well on the smell.

T-Rich hazelnut chocolate ice cream. A touch of the coffee and cream as well.

F-Full bodied...heavy...rich....decadent..

O-I love hazelnut beers and this is a dandy. Did not realize this was an Imperial stout until I poured it. It works great for this style as it combines perfectly with the rich, sweet chocolate ice cream like notes. Excellent dessert style imperial Stout. Definitely sweet and will be too sweet for some but it hits all the notes for me.

Very nice hazelnut-tasting stout, just a little disappointing based on the reviews here as it was just a little too sweet. Pours nice dark brown color, almost black, with some dark brown head and spotty lingering lacing. Smells amazing, loads of hazelnut with some weaker coffee and chocolate mocha. Tastes similarly, along with some oak, bourbon, creamy vanilla, malt and caramel. Smooth, thick, coats the palate, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Good carbonation. Higher ABV is fairly well-hidden. It’s just a little too sweet and cloying, and tough to pair with a savory meal.

Surprisingly spray beer. Hazel’s nuts are there and the malt lends a pleasant caramel tone rather than a more patent backing. Love the nuance between nose and taste. Leave an unctuous nut butter pleasantness on the finish.

A - Perfect color deep dark blackness with a 1/2 inch of super dark mocha head
S - Wow that stout smells sweet! Hazelnut creme coffee all the way very sugary and very chocolatey!
T - Glad the taste is sweet love sweet stouts it does have a good espresso bitterness to it but quickly revived by the heavy creme stout base. Very little if any bourbon but to me thats appreciated!
M - Smooth creamy sweet and balanced ABV drinks rather medium than heavy

Overall it's a pity I didn't grab another a very tasty sweet imperial stout I believe was only 4 bucks which to me is a steal for a Bourbon RIS. Fully recommended for those who likes sweet stouts!

Poured from 12oz bottle into glass. Stamped bottling date is '09/05/18'.
Black colored body, with very thin dark brown edge when back lit. Thick, creamy cap stays around. Leaves behind an oily sheet of small lacing spots.
Lots of coffee and nuts in the aroma. Not sensing the barrel.
Taste does include the oak and barrel, along with the strong coffee and hazelnut. Dark roasted malts include some chocolate and a flavor that is close to coconut. This beer is sweet rather than expressing any bitterness.
Thick, creamy mouth feel. Okay carbonation.
Rather complex creamy stout that hides the alcohol well.

Bottled on 9/5/18. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a small dark khaki head that fades leaving solid retention and sticky. The aromas are loaded with hazelnuts. Some chocolate chips, vanilla and caramel. Sweet malts are there. The bourbon is pretty subtle and hard to pick up on, but it still smells awesome nonetheless. The flavors follow the nose perfectly. More hazelnut leading the way. Lots of dark chocolate along with some vanilla. It's on the sweeter side, but it's not cloying. The bourbon is present in the finish, but doesn't shine or dominate, which works in this case. Some warmth in the finish, but it's not hot or boozy. Mouthfeel is full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's smooth and is ultimately dangerously drinkable.

This is a really great stout. The hazelnut shines. Great aromas and flavors. The bourbon takes a backseat, and probably for the better in this case. I love these kind of stouts. Well done. It's definitely my favorite beer that I've had from Odd Side Ales, to date.

Raul is gonna be real, he’s gonna be blunt: this is the first time he wanted nuts in his mouth. Now, the question is: did they deliver? Kind of. Yeah, kind of.

Cool part for real, like a foot away you sniff this beer and you like, “Damn, shawty, I feelin’ those nutz.” But scent is one thing, she could smell like Beyoncé, but taste like Lindsay Lohan, ya feel me? And the taste? Aww shucks. 100% Lohan. Thing is, them nuts are strong. Real strong. But they are a bit too artificial for Raul’s liking. When Raul wants nutz, he wants REAL nutz. Not some chem lab, 2nd year student’s science project.

Now, I hate to do it dirty like that. Maybe I’m doin’ it too hard. But that’s only because the mouthfeel is light. Like Coca Cola light. Give me a lil bit here, a lil bit there, and I can understand that nothing is perfect. But weak taste and mouthfeel? Yeah, Raul been burned before (I’m talkin’ about you, boo 2) and he hates bein’ burned again.

Lasting note: flavor may not be artificial, or it could just be that Raul don’t like Hazel nutz

Thanks to superspak! I really liked this one. Record in the NBS BIF #8
Pours a deep, dark brown. Mocha colored head pushes up just shy of 2 inches, drops back to about an inch, hangs out for a spell, leaves some nice patchy lacing, and after a few minutes leaves a thin ring. Quite pretty.
Nose is cocoa, gentle roast, and a really tempting hazelnut note that's slightly toasty, and a tad sweet.
Ah the taste follows beautifully. Full, round chocolate notes give way to a graceful melange of smooth coffee and lightly toasted hazelnut. Finally getting a nuanced bourbon sweetness, and a hint of subdued heat, more of a warmth. It really allows for all of these flavors to shine in a graceful melody. None are overshadowed, all are welcome.
Mouthfeel is medium plus, subtle carbonation.
Overall, this is one fine Impy Stout that features hazelnuts. I'd make this part of my regular rotation if I lived closer to MI.

Appearance: Pours the color of Hazel's beard (check her out on the label) with a thick beige head that leaves some clumpy lace

Smell: Chocolate, caramel, vanilla and roasted hazelnut; just a kiss of Bourbon from bearded Hazel

Taste: Chocolate forward with caramel, roasted hazelnut, vanilla and just a hint of coffee; through the middle, the Bourbon builds, but the finish is sweet with some residual tones from the Bourbon barrel

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Almost two years old and some of the flavors (the coffee in particular) have faded and what remains is rather sweet

bottled 10/11/17
Look - Black medium thick body, mocha-brown thib later of head, foam on surface.
Nose - Hazelnuts, milk chocolate, light-med roast coffee, nutty, roasty, hint of bourbon.
Taste - hazelnuts, milk chocolate, coffee and malt roastiness, trace of bourbon sweetness, coconut, more hazelnut, and small trace of heat for 11%. Finishes with a medium light sweetness for the style. More of a cola quality as it warms
Feel - Medium to thin, definitely surprised me. Higher than average carbonation and fairly active fizzing on the tongue.

An enjoyable nutty and not overly forward BBA stout that many can enjoy.

About as beautiful a combination of roast, nuttiness, earthy wood, dark chocolate, dried fruit, figs, and rye as you can get. Really amazing nuttiness that makes it unique, but the dark fruits bring it home. Sweet but not cloyingly so. So dark and rich.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 2/16/17, had 2/15/18.

Pours a very dark brown, opaque, with a half inch quickly dissipating head and some soapy lacing. Aromas of... wow, a ton of hazelnuts, coffee, malt, some cocoa and caramel, light dark chocolate. Really smells terrific. The taste is coffee, hazelnuts, malt, dark chocolate, caramel, light molasses, very light vanilla. A roasty bitterness. Smooth, somewhat creamy, a very good medium body, well carbonated.

The hazelnuts are the star, the coffee is excellent. Terrific aroma and flavor, very enjoyable. Run for this one and grab a few, if you can. One was not enough for me.

Fans of sweet, sweet, boozy stouts rejoice! This beer is for you! I was amazed by the intensity of this beer. The smell was simply fantastic, like freshly roasted german nuts with notes of bourbon goodness. I almost wanted to smell this beer more than I wanted to drink it... almost. Because the taste was also intense but in a more rewardingly complex way. Add to the nuts and bourbon flavors of toffee, caramel, vanilla, and plenty of dark fudge. A perfect dessert beer.

Thank you Zaphog for this
12 oz bottle poured into a tulip

A- Black with a small mocha head

S- Hazelnuts, rich roasted coffee, fudge, vanilla, nutty. Makes me think of a rich fudgy brown with walnuts.

T- Not as rich as the nose but still good. Bourbon, chocolate, hazelnuts, roasted coffee, some vanilla.

M- Smooth, full body, creamy.

O- An excellent stout, love how this smells, easy to drink. I could drink a lot of this.

I place this beer firmly in the one-and-done-post-dinner-dessert-sweet-treat category. Technically speaking, of course. It’s a mighty tasty beer that occupies that oft discussed zone on the cusp of being a beer.

Coal-black with a tan head that puffs up and then slowly sags and fades.

Aroma is fudge brownie, hazelnut coffee, chocolate cake batter. Light notes of oak and bourbon lingering in the background.

Taste is hazelnut coffee and cake-forward. Sweet and cloying, but not sticky. The bourbon barrel brings and added weight that prevents the beer from totally floating away on a sugary-sweet cloud of whimsy. No bitterness whatsoever.

Sweet and decadent, moderate mouthfeel that’s isn’t too heavy. The kind of beer that reminds you to brush your teeth when you’re done. A nice treat.

Brief Review:

O: Oh man, can we talk about how good this beer is? Once a sought-after Black Friday release for Odd Side's, this is now easily accessible for them and is probably one of the most overlooked BA stouts on the market. Aroma is absolutely gigantic, smells like you cracked a fresh hazelnut and ground it up and sprinkled it in the beer. Flavor smacks of huge hazelnut, coffee, chocolate, and faint bourbon notes. Mouthfeel is medium-full, and that's just fine. Not better than that other beer released on Black Friday, but I've honestly enjoyed this more than Black Note and KBS this year. Not a huge fan of Odd Side in general, but when they're on, they're on.

Recommendation: An absolute stunner from Odd Side, a must try for any BA stout lover.

Pours deep, dark brown with a little head. Good lacing as you drink with slight head retention.
Aroma is really strong hazelnut coffee with some vanilla and toffee. I’m not a hazelnut fan so this isn’t a great thing but i’ll try to review as if I like hazelnut. That said, a powerful aroma that is impressive.
Taste is like the aroma. This is a cup, or glass, of hazelnut coffee with slight vanilla, toffee, bourbon tones. Slightly more bitter than I would like but enjoyable, recognizing my hazelnut issue.
Mouthfeel is mixed. Medium carbonation is slightly more than it needs and taste is a bit watery relative to the color and bold smell and flavor. Good but not great.
Overall, this is a really good beer as long as you like hazelnut coffee. I don’t so my score is split between what I think it would be if I liked hazelnut and what o know it is drinking he beer. If that makes any sense...

Poured a viscous black color with a beige head. Then wow, the aromas! Picked up a ton of hazelnut followed by mocha with added chocolate. Put them together and it was like a peanut butter cup. Did not pick any bourbon though. Upon tasting, I took in hazelnut, sweetened coffee, and chocolate or better described as brownie batter. It's very sweet throughout with no trace of bitterness. At the finish, the beer lended a smooth transition to flavors of bourbon that was not the least bit overwhelming. The mouthfeel was heavy and rich, yet not so sticky. Overall a solid beer. Flavors were not artificial-like and the barrels added a trace of bourbon without being overwhelming.
