Pours dark with a great head that sticks around. Lots of citrus aroma, with some caramel malt. Tastes like it smells; hoppy with plenty of roasted malts and some burnt toast. Good mouthfeel with a little more carbonation than I would like. Clean finish; not a lot of after taste but robust. All that said, I think it's interesting, as most Odd Sides brews are, but not one I'll go back to. To many other beers I enjoyed more.

12 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a becker glass

This beer pours almost black. Just the faintest of ruby light comes through when held to the light. It is topped with two inches of tan head that leaves some nice lacing.

I smell roasted malt and floral hops.

The taste is a nice balance of hops and roasted malt. It starts out with roasted malt flavor that gives way to some citrus and bitterness in the finish.

Full mouthfeel

This is not my favorite style, but I have to try everything that Odd Side makes because I love their creativity. This is a solid beer.

I picked up a bottle of Oddside's Car Ramrod last week at The Lager Mill. I've had the Black Citra before, but I'm interested to see how this imperial version turns out, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks ok, it goes with the name, but it isn't the most eye catching. It poured a nice black color that didn't let any light come through and it had almost two fingers worth of creamy tan head that died down to a thick ring and it left some nice rings of lacing behind. This is a very nice looking beer, I have no complaints at all.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the citra hops being the first to show up and they impart those signature citrus and tropical fruit aromas with pineapple seeming to stick out the most and there's a little bit of a coconut aroma. Up next comes some sweet malts that leads into some dark and roasted malts that seem to be on the lighter side. This beer had a good aroma, the hop profile is very nice, but I wish the roasted malts came through a little more.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the citra hops still being the first to show up and they impart those same tropical fruit and citrus fruit aspects, but this time no single fruit seems to stick out the most and I don't get any of that coconut. Up next comes a light alcohol flavor that leads into the malts which impart the same sweet malt, dark malt and roasted malt aspects that they did in the aroma and they to be just as light. Towards the end there's a higher amount of medium bitterness with a nice citra hop aftertaste with just a little bit of roasted malts in the background. This is a pretty nice tasting beer, the hop profile really delivers, but the malt base seemed to be lost by the hops and I wish it was more balanced.

M- Fairly smooth, a little crisp, on the thicker side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and a good example of the style, it was pretty true to style, but it lacked a little bit of that balance that some of the best Black IPA's seem to have. This beer had ok drinkability, I could drink a couple of these, but it might start to wear on me after that. What I like the most about this beer is the hop profile, it's very nice and it's the highlight of this beer. What I like the least about this beer was the balance, when it came to the taste it seemed like the hops covered up most of those roasted malt flavors. I would buy this beer again when in the mood for a Black IPA and I would recommend to anybody who likes the style. All in all This turned out to be a good beer, but it was still just a little rough around the edges. It' not my favorite Oddsides beer, but I think it's a good example of the style. Good job guys, this is a pretty tasty Black IPA, keep up the good work.

Pours dark brown. Thick, medium, tan head, lasts a while.

Smells citrus, light roasted malts, hints coffee and earthy.

Tastes lightly sweet roasted malts, earthy, piney, citrus. Finish is a mix of lingering hop and roasted malt. Medium to higher body and smooth, creamy lower medium carbonation.

Bottle dated 3/14/16. Oops! DFH Tulip.

A: pours a completely opaque black that light does not penetrate. 1 finger frothy, foamy tan head. Dissipates to a lasting thin cap. Great lacing.

S: still smells pretty hoppy, five plus months old. Sweet, juicy citrus. Hint of pine resin and, a little chocolate roasted malt.

T: roasted malt is not imagined on the palate. Arrives mildly sweet and plenty roasty. Some of that sweetness and citrus fruit is there, but I get the sense this is a shadow of its former self. Resiny hops are intertwined throughout, and the roast is noticeable but noticeably less profound than it would be in a style where it is showcased. Hops are ubiquitous, but never bitter. Very mild ending, but lingers mildly af Very well integrated beer; would be awesome in March.

M: has a pretty typical DIPA texture; just over mid-weight, moderate fluffy ale carbonation, clean finish. That this feels like a DIPA, but tastes like an American Steong Ale is really appealing to me.

O: this is a hoppy beer, there is no mistake about that; but at this point it basically tastes like a very hoppy robust porter, but with a lighter and more drinkable texture. Should revisit when fresh. I was in Michigan for less than 24 hours and blew into a store, bought six beers, and hit the road so forgot to check dates. Every single one was out of date or undated. I would buy a four pack of this. Not a six.
