Aug 2020 Review
Pint bottle filled at Barrels &Vines. Poured into a tulip glass.

Look: deep, rich brown with two finger tan head. Tons of lacing, thick ring clouds. One of, if not the best looks I’ve seen. 5.0

Smell: maple, chocolate, rye whiskey. Super fragrant. 4.5

Taste: Coffee, maple, chocolate, oak, rye, bourbon, hints of vanilla, cinnamon, cola. A little sweet on the front end, spicy with some bitterness on the backend. Super complex but incredibly well balanced. I love beers like this so my rating is biased but this is a 5 For me or awfully close. 5.0

Feel: thick, rich, smooth. Low carbonation. Coats the tongue but nothing cloying about the sweetness. 4.75

Overall: love this beer. First time I’ve had it and I think it’s an ATF. Hard to say what a 5 is but this is really close. If you love big BA complex stouts this is a must try. Will be buying another pint or two ASAP. 4.75

"Imperial stout brewed with maple syrup then aged in bourbon whiskey, rye whiskey, maple wood and double oak barrels with coffee and bacon added" MFG 11/11/19, 10.25% ABV, $5.99/12 oz bottle at BevCo.

Pours out to a viscous deep inky black forming a tall stiff dark tan head with excellent lacing and retention. The aroma is quite nice...black walnut, vanilla, cold brew coffee, bourbon and subtle maple syrup. The mouthfeel is syrupy, pleasantly cloying, oily, very rich and dense bodied. Medium carbonation, ~2.5 carbs. The taste is a recap of the aroma. Huge chewy malts with lots of roasted malts. The acidity of the malts is a little intense, could benefit from some bicarb and dial the quantity back. Potent bourbon flavor. Very potent. Stinging alcohol bite is hot and peppery. I am convinced the barrels were not taken into account re: the ABV. This tastes at least 15%, I would be very interested in an analysis. The alcohol is so potent that it throws this quite out of balance. I do not taste bacon at all, that was a waste/marketing gimmick. Very woody. Bitterness is medium firm. Overall starts sweet but finished with alcohol burn and roast.

An interesting beer. I applaud the effort and there are no off-flavors here, but the recipe isn't for my tastes. I wouldn't be inclined to buy this again, there are much better imperial stouts for 1/2 the price. If you love your bourbon (as I do), it's worth a try.
