Poured into a tulip, no bottling date.

L- Dark, dark brown/black, tiny amount of light coming through, light brown head.

S- Light mango, citrus, and light roast.Even though there is no bottling date the aroma would lead me to believe it's not too old as the roast hasn't overshadowed the hops yet.

T- Similar to aroma with a light bitterness.

F- Lighter side of medium, very easy drinking.

O- Very nice almost sessionable black hoppy pale, all the flavor of the original but with that added light roasted note. Definitely pick some up if you know it's fresh.

12oz bottle from LambicPentameter (thanks man!). Bottled 8/26/15. Served in a Wicked Weed snifter.

Pours a dark cola black brown with almost two fingers of sand hued head. The foam lingers before settling to a thin layer across the surface and a halo that leaves some large patches of lace.

Smells of pine, citrus zest, orange and a little vague coffee. A decent mix of citrusy hops and roasty malt.

Taste follows the nose. Mandarines, orange peel, grapefruit, heavily roasted malt, coffee, pine, faint cocoa and a little burnt caramel. No discernible alcohol so this is all flavor and goes down quite easily.

Fullish, almost creamy body with softly active carbonation. Citrus and roast linger in the mildly bitter finish.

Oddside has brewed a softer, fruitier hop profile for Black Citra than I typical find in American black ales. This is a great example of an easy drinking black ale with a nice citrusy hop profile and a sturdier body than the abv might lead you to believe. Good stuff.

Not a huge fan of this beer....had higher expectations. It poured a opaque black with offwhite head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent carries faint pine and bitterness. The taste is somewhat smokey and is very strange and I am not a overly huge fan. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with decent carbonation. Nope....won't go buying this one again.....would try it on tap though....just to see if it is better.

We pour from the bottle into our Great Lakes pint glasses. It shows a deep shade of mahogany brown when held directly to light. A one finger head of light tan foam is produced, and this retains decently into a soapy, thicker film across the top of the liquid. Globular cords of lacing sit in its wake. No haze is noted, but finite sediment sits throughout. Carbonation appears to be medium. The aroma gives rich Graham cracker and warmed honey sweetness, salty pale malt wash, roasty chalked black and chocolate malts, sweetly soapy and citric hoppiness, lactic milkiness, fruitiness of apricot and pineapple, mineral, penicillin, soft plastic phenols, and a light black pepper booziness. Following through across the buds is a blend of clean citric hoppy bitterness over top of soy sauce saltiness, bitterly burnt coffee, black, and chocolate maltiness, pineapple, tangerine, and mango fruit sugars, cereal graininess, vegetal seaweed, coiny metallics, chalked ale yeastiness, coffee acidity, white sugar cloy, hazelnut sweetness, Styrofoam, and lingering smokiness of charcoal. The body is relatively light, and the carbonation is equally as muted. Each sip gives decent slurp, smack, cream, and froth, leaving the mouth cooled, thinly oiled, and eventually chalky dry. Puck is minimal, but palpable. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks away nicely.

Overall, this beer has some nice flavor for your Midwestern black ale. It finds the right balance between smoked, deep maltiness, and hops from the sweeter side of the spectrum. This is one beer where temperature makes a huge difference. When colder, at fridge temps, the flavoring dominated, making the aroma seem condensed in comparison. To contrast, however, when the beer began to warm, there was a switch. The nose settled down, tightened, darkened, and became stickier, while the flavoring thinned down along with the feel. This was probably the least appealing thing about the beer, but we’re definitely being critical. Odd Side has produced a nice beverage for a style that we are always looking for more of. Easy to enjoy.

Aroma is grapefruit and mango dominant initially, then very chocolatey and roasty. Notes of resin and pine contrast the chocolatey sweetness.

Flavor is sweet and chocolatey initially, fading to resiny and roasty bitterness in the finish. The fruity hop character pales, in comparison. Muted grapefruit and mango are overshadowed by the dark malt presence, and the combination reads as acetone. There's a bit of astringency that lingers.

Bottle dated 8/20/14:
Pour is a very dark brown, appearing almost black. Head is light tan, and forms a decent fluffy head atop the pour. Eventually the head fades to a full film on the surface, and the edges provide copious lacing during the drink.

Nose is definitely roasted in nature up front, but also somewhat indistinct: get some cola, woodiness, light hints of root spices. Complimenting this is the scent of lemon and orange zest, and maybe a little grass as it warms.

The beer has a nice level of carbonation up front and a woody dry finish in the end. In between is a straightforward Black IPA. I get notes of coffee beans on the dark side, as well as a little bite, maybe ginger or sasparilla. There are also nice accents of citrus that never take over the dark feel of the whole beer.

I wished the citrus or tropical fruits came through a bit more. The accents I did get were interesting, and I wouldn't want them to overtake the "black" nature of the beer, but I think I'd enjoy it more if they were a little stronger.

Incredible. Tastes similar to Citra with citrus undertones and good hoppiness. The dark color is not as evident in the flavor as you might expect (no strong coffee or chocolate flavor). One of my favorite beers.
