Sorry, I just didn't like this beer. Two sips and an unfortunate drain pour.

There is definitely a habenero kick to it, which lingers. The other components work against each othe, IMO. The mouthfeel is oddly smooth for a beer with this type of bite on the back end.

a huge shout out goes to jas45678 for including both the BA and regular version of this beer as extras in a recent goandpickitupformebro (believe it or not, this feind had the never to include even more extras). both beers enjoyed side by side from a hunah snifter (regular) and an abraxas snifter (BA).

a - regular version poured with a deep rich black as midnight sludge with a nice off-tan colored head that didn't hang long and left a ring of bubbles on the surface where the glass met the beer. swirling the glass brought it back to life and there was some spotty lace. the bourbon barrel version on the other hand, had a gorgeous shine to it. no head to speak of at all. more ominous...oooh ahhh

s - gorgeous nose. this beer can hang with hunah, mexican cake, the stone xoco...something or other. really great blend in the nose of rich chocolate with just the right amount of cinammon and spicing.

t/m/o - not as full bodied as i expected, but the flavor is there. a wonderful blend of chocolate, spice, coffee, cinnamon and nutmeg. super silky, super smooth...a bit on the thin side, but then again this isn't an imperial stout. great great great beer...definitely seek this out.

A delicious, well-balanced stout with the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate. The heat from the habaneros compliment the coffee, chocolate, cinnamon and nutmeg peefectly, leaving heat on the palate without becoming heavy or overbearing. A fantastic winter beer, this stout was delicious and should be enjoyed at near room temperatures, in my opinion.

Pours a very dark opaque black/brown with a 1 finger chocolate head. Head disipated leaving a layer of foam and a little lacing.

Smells of chocolate, coffee and sweet malt. The cinnamon and nutmeg come in when you take a drink. Then on the back end you get the burn of the habanero. Not overly spicy, just a nice bite to add some interest. My threshold for capsaicin is pretty high so this might be hotter than I'm letting on. For me the spice gives me the bite and flavor of a very dark bittersweet chocolate bar. I like it.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but this is a delicious and drinkable stout that gets better as it goes.

De Labirratorium. En copa Teku. Viendo The OA 2x07. Si bien aromaticamente prometia, en boca es un desastre. A alguien se le ha ido la mano con los habaneros. Quema la garganta. Imbebible. Al fregadero por miedo a que me siente mal

OddSide Ales Mayan Mocha Stout.

Been getting into these peppered beer more and more lately. Saw " Habaneros " on the list of ingredients so I'm hoping it has a good level of heat. More or leas I was curious to see how they balance the flavors in this beer. Picked up a single for $2.79 at Jake's Liquor in Monroe, Michigan as part of a mix a six. Enough chit chat shit shat, let's dive in.

Look - From the twelve ounce bottle into a pint glass. Pours a deep and impenetrable black with a finger and a half of moderately mocha colored head that doesn't stick around long, quickly dying down to a moderately thick cloud formation upon the top of the swill and a thicker ring around the glass. Carbonation is impossible to read due to how dark the beer is. No lacing remains after the beer is gone.

Smell - The cinnamon and nutmeg are HUGE in the nose. I really don't get much in the way of any stout qualities here at all. Smells a lot more like a winter warmer than a stout. The heat from the peppers cab be felt through the nostrils but it isn't enough to make you contemplate for a moment on taking a sip. aside from the heat there is no vegetative pepper smell that sometimes comes through in these types of beers.

Taste - Once again cinnamon and nutmeg dominant. The coffee becomes present though it isn't very pronounced. The heat comes through stronger than in the scent but it is a very quick shot and dies down almost immediately after the swallow though lingers around the mouth mildly. Once again this beer tastes more like a peppered winter warmer than any kind of stout I've ever had.

Feel - Body is somehow thick and coating or watery and thin seemingly depending on the sip you take. Once again the cinnamon dominates heavily in the mouth with the heat coming through upon the swallow but not being nearly habanero in strenght. Beer swallows with a lower amount of heavyness and the cinnamon sits around the mouth for what seems like an eternity.

Overall - They went way too heavy on the cinnamon with this beer. Not many stout qualities to be noticed. The heat wasn't as much as I had expected seeing as it was brewed with habanero peppers. Much closer to a winter warmer than a stout, and even then the cinnamon needs to be toned down. Not a bad beer overall, but not something I will return to. I'd like to see them drop the christmas spices and brew a more traditional stout with habaneroes and actually ensure they come through. Maybe it's just the fact I love ultra hot foods that makes these seem very tame to me. Who knows..
