Can from ABV.

Um, no. This isn't a hefeweizen. Not even close. A clear amber with a dense, white head, this looks OK. The nose is a rather boring blend of stale wheat and paint. There's no banana or spice notes here, except maybe for a smell that makes me think of rotten bananas that have been burnt. The palate is similarly awful. Slick and slimy with a metallic flavor, this is disappointing. Moderately sweet as well, there's nothing remotely hefeweizen like here.

Look, hefe's are generally not great beers, but this was decent for the style. Trended towards spicy/clove finish over banana/lemon/citrus. Nice hefe. Light, clean, crisp, with a spice kick/finish. Decent offering.

Can from Boise Co-op. While I had high hopes for this based on their stellar IPAs, this is a letdown from the start. Pours out weak, tiny head that disappears in an instant. Aroma and taste are a bit too light for the style (almost there), body is nice and cloudy and feels right. Nice try, near miss.

delicious hefe here, one of my first beers from these guys. pretty classic in look and feel, maybe a little lighter in color than some of the classics, but right there with them. maybe a little thinner too, not quite as round and fluffy, but it certainly works well enough on those counts. what makes this one distinct for me is a definitive lemongrass quality to it, herbal and fresh in nose and taste, almost like thai food or something, its quite distinct and pronounced. i have no idea if there is actually lemongrass in this, or if they have achieved the aroma and flavor some other way, but it sure tastes like real lemongrass. its nice with the banana flavors in the yeast and the fresh wheat malt. this is a flavor profile that really works with the usual flavors in the style. excellent carbonation makes it quite refreshing, and overall it has a very summery vibe to it, warm weather crusher for sure. this is better than its getting credit for on here, i think the lemongrass element, no matter where it comes from, is a really nice touch. well done.

Nice golden color, slightly more hops than most Hefe's, really good wheat beer to pair with food. As far as domestically produced what beers go, this is one of my favorites.

With a bright, opaque straw color, has a mild yet refreshing grain malt with light fruits in the aroma and taste. A good midrange Hefeweizen with the Hefeweizen from Santa Fe Brewing Company. After that, I highly recommend the Hefewiezen from Karl Strauss and La Cumbre’s A Slice of Hefen.

On tap at Mother Earth in Vista. Very cloudy and heavy looking in the glass. Has the usual Hefe aromas/flavors, but just a bit too light on the nose and taste. Having had SN Kellerweis the day before, I couldn't help but compare the two. This just seemed a bit weaker to me overall, however, still a decent beer.

A hefeweizen paired with warm winner always wins, right? Combining that with a casino theme on the can's label and I think I had found a true winner. On to the beer:

Sparking bubbles run through the body of this slightly cloudy blonde beer. On top rests two finger's worth of head, which leaves spotty lace around. The beer smells like a watery hefeweizen. The nutty, spicy, and banana characters are there, but light in character. In fact, I was thinking of the watery character as I drank it. The beer has a decent taste, bringing a modest note of esters, banana, and a kiss of spice. Not intense, and it rides in a light and watery body.

The end result ends up as mediocre.

Pretty good hefe. Light body, great smell, taste was not to heavy but just right for a hot summer day; light and refreshing. Can looked awesome. Poured into a pint glass, heavy head, great tasting!

Mild and aromatic sort of wheat beer. A pleasant quaff with lighter flavors than the usual fruit and clove bombs. Tangy and slightly spicy. Mellow and smooth down the throat.

Maybe this is a better version of the Hefeweizen for quaffing, but it has to compete with so many lucious German style brews. But lets call it a southern calif hefe. On tap at Panama 66 in Balboa Park.

On tap at Whole Foods in Venice, CA.

Pours a murky honey orange-yellow with a foamy off-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, wheat, and slight spice aromas. Taste is much the same with wheat, fruit, and slight spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of earth bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is drinkable but the aromas and flavors on this one are pretty subtle to me.

Serving type: on tap.
