Appearance: A beautiful iridescent orange with great lacing and awesome, bone colored head.

Nose: Syrupy orange candy. A bit of vanilla throughout.

Taste: Marmalade, candy mango, syrup, some bitter rind, and a tiny bit of spice.

Notes: A very nice DIPA, I was not let down.

This has skyrocketed into my top ten. It's everything I like in an IPA, let alone an imperial IPA. Super juicy, lots of tropical fruit, just enough malt to give it a tiny bit of heft, no booziness at all. It's just a really great burst of flavor and I highly recommend it.

Poured a clear amber-orange body with a half finger of thick, bubbly white head and abundant yeast that settles to the bottom of the glass. Overall impression of appearance is of a very nice DIPA, brought down slightly by the large amount of visible, chunky yeast. Scents of tropical fruit, leading into tangerine flesh and peel, grapefruit zest, grassy hops, moderate amounts of pine resin, subtle hints of dank, earthy, vegetal hop aromas and solid supporting aromas of biscuity pale malt and light alcohol. As it sits it becomes dominated by dank, vegetal aromas, adding another layer of complexity by reversing the aroma profile entirely. Overall impression of aroma is of a very nice, bright, fruity West Coast style DIPA that is wonderfully hop-forward and that then shifts character as it sits to become a different, yet still excellent, example of a West Coast DIPA. Flavor begins hoppy, with notes of grapefruit peel, pine resin, white pepper, spicy hops and light amounts of tangerine and tropical fruit. Middle picks up further resinous, piney hop notes, as well as some grassy hops and white pepper and notes of grapefruit peel and semi-sweet juniper berries, as well as very light notes of tangerine flesh. Finish continues these flavors, with white pepper, pine resin and grapefruit peel dominating, while a nice spicy alcohol is present at light levels. Aftertaste is bitter and hoppy with notes of spicy, white pepper hops, pine resin and grapefruit peel. Overall impression of flavor is of a very nice DIPA. It is very hoppy, but in a pleasing way and with a wealth of flavors. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with medium-high carbonation and a slick feel with a light alcohol burn. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a very good DIPA, no problems. Overall this is an excellent example of a West Coast DIPA. It showcases the aromas and flavors of the typical hop bill of the style wonderfully and combines with mouthfeel to enhance those flavors. A very good example of a very saturated style.

An extremely underrated beer, and what a treat it is. A very impressive DIPA. Juicy, tropical flavor, well balanced with just the right amount of "hoppy" flavor, and no booze taste like poorly brewed DIPAs often have. It's really a great brew with excellent flavor! Excellent beer just below world class in my opinion.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Lagunitas mason jar
From: Costco in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $18.99 for a variety 4-pack of bombers
Purchased: Nov. 6, 2015
Consumed: Nov. 10, 2015
Misc.: N/A

Poured an orangeish, caramel, semi-clear color with three fingers of khaki-white, frothy head. Some light bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent spiderweb, foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Very good-to-great retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled sharp grapefruit zest, lemon, dank pine, lime grass, Simcoe, Citra, sweet tangerine, some herbal, faint Cascade and caramel. (Smell - 4.00)

First taste reminded of a better version of New Belgium Ranger IPA. Got boozy Citra, dank pine, veggies, herbal, grassy, lime, lemon zest, Cascade, tropical, earthy mango rind, tangerine, resin, Nugget and caramel. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Astringent, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was actually better than I thought it would be for some reason. Nice IIPA, especially for the price. I’d have it again. I feel like I may have underrated it a tad. (Overall - 3.75)

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Clear dark orange, nearly amber, with a thin off-white head that eventually leaves spots of lace down the glass.

Very hop-forward aroma, with the aroma exploding with grapefruit and pine aromas combining together nicely. There's a bit of sweetness but it doesn't come off as a major component of the beer's nose.

The flavor is moderately bitter, with big notes of grapefruit and orange, along with some sticky pine. The malt profile is a touch sweet, with a hint of caramel.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, though crisp and incredibly drinkable.

Better than Primordial--this stuff is awesome!

Canned on date of 10/16/15 (my birthday!)

Appearance - Pours relatively clear and golden sap in color with an off-white, finger width head. Fair retention, resulting in a thin, broken layer of suds. Lacing consists of patches of small, spotty clumps around the glass.

Smell - Citrus and mango hit the nose first. Faint pineapple, and malts hint at bready sweetness.

Taste - This is a mango bomb. Lesser notes of orange with faint pineapple zing. Subtle, generic white bread sweetness. The finish displays a fair amount of pith bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Near full in body with moderate carbonation. Slick, smooth delivery.

Overall - One of the more uniquely flavored DIPA's, but a bit too reserved in the secondary attributes makes this a bit of a one-trick pony. Somewhat akin to New Belgium Rampant, only that one is peach-dominant.
