Got this bomber bottle in a BIF. It was picked up from the brewery during their anniversary party. I poured it into a balloon glass. The body is a deep, cloudy, burnt orange color. The head is a thick ochre foam that looks like it leaves some lacing, but quickly dies down after a minute or two to a thin layer. It resembles a barleywine more than a DIPA (or Triple IPA as this is called on the label).

The aroma is filled with big notes of traditional American hops, carrying with them hints of sweet orange marmalade. But there is an equal amount of big malt aromas here as well, predominantly toasted malt, caramel, and fig. Nothing exceptional, though certainly well balanced. Again, for the style, I feel like a more complex hop aroma is called for, and maybe the subtle age has not been to this beer's benefit?

Big Mother is bitter from start to finish, but not overly aggressive. There is a balancing sweetness mid-palate that follows a heavy alcohol note up front. Bitterness rests on the sides of the tongue and hits more towards the back. The taste is characterized by the big malt flavors, whereas the hops contribute little more than their bitter resin. Again, I think that it's probable this beer had a better hop character when it was first released.

Good amount of carbonation that helps to lift this heaviness of this beer. It certainly is full-bodied, and maybe a tad hot, but despite the big body and bold malt flavor, it isn't sticky sweet. Big Mother succeeds here in living up to the "BIG" moniker and doesn't go overboard like some notorious monster beers.

Overall, I think this beer is a better candidate for an American Barleywine than DIPA. The hops at this point (and maybe from before?) are too overshadowed by the sweet malts, which really steal the show. I can't say this is a good DIPA, as there is a lot of room for improvement on all fronts. I would treat the ratings quite differently if it were classified differently. Not a bad beer...just not a good DIPA.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Modern Times pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $8.99 (I think (lost receipt))
Purchased: May 21, 2015
Consumed: May 22, 2015
Misc.: 2015 version - 10.5 pct. ABV

Poured a golden, orange, hazy color with three fingers of frothy, white head. Could just barely see some bublles coming up along the sides of the glass. Good amount of uneven, spiderweb lacing along the sides of the glass. Average-to-above average retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled pleasant hops up front of Citra, floral, Centennial and tropical. Also got nectarine, nectarine rind, caramel, peach, mango and light pineapple. (Smell - 4.00)

Initial thought on the first taste was…. funky. Got spoiled fruit, Centennial hops, Citra hops, floral hops, tropical hops, melon, pineapple, mango, tangerine rind, Grew on me late, but couldn’t quite pull the 4.00 trigger. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was just a funky beer, but the more it went down the more I thought it of the good side. (Overall - 4.00)

Clear, dark orange with a thin white film for a head that leaves an oily sheen and small specks of stick down the glass. Looks quite a bit like Pliny the Younger, which, in my opinion, is not a particularly pretty beer.

The aroma is powerful, aggressive, and probably the best aspect of the beer. I could smell the tropical and citrus fruit presence immediately when the bartender placed the glass in front of me. There's powerful grapefruit and white grape elements as well, along with sweet caramel and a touch of alcohol. A big, powerful, appropriate aroma for a triple IPA.

This is a complex triple IPA, with orange, grapefruit, melon, and grape flavors leading the way. There's also some sweet bread, high bitterness, and definite alcohol harshness. Good, though lacks finesse.

Medium to full mouthfeel with moderate to high carbonation. Very nice.

A nice effort for a somewhat difficult style.
