Fairly nice red ale from a local brewery that’s new to me. Pours a red-amber color with just a little mild white head and very minimal spotty lingering lacing. Smells of some malt, roasted nuts, caramel and muddled faint hops. Tastes similarly, with just a small hit of hoppy bitterness at the finish. I couldn’t really detect the maple syrup or honey sweetness. Mild, thin mouthfeel and decent carbonation that tended to fade as the beer warmed. A fair amount of warming alcohol. A decent offering.

Had this on tap at the brewery 5-30-11.

After reading the other reviews I am wondering if this was just a bad batch ?

Nice enough looking beer I suppose, but thats where the good part ends. Some malt and hop flavor snuck through, but the main two flavors were alcohol and diacetyl.Even the smell was off putting.I was looking forward to this one, but I could hardly finish the glass.An unbalanced mess.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, train wreck is a very pretty, clear amber color with a thin, yet stable off-white head. The nose has the components of what you might expect from an amber, lightly toasted bread and caramel. There is also a slightly spicy component I was not expecting that I attribute to the higher ABV. The flavor comes back with an initial toasty breadiness which faintly reminds me of victory and transitions into a sweet caramel/dark fruity flavor and finally a very warming alcohol finish that reminds me of a dubbel. The mouthfeel is full in body with a minimal yet creamy carbonation. This beer is easily drinkable; while the ABV is noticeable it is a well crafted beer which makes you forget how much is in there. I could easily see how this beer could lead to a "train wreck". By far the best beer out of my six pack from Mt. Pleasant Brewing Co.

Copper colored with slight haze as some of the yeast got poured into the glass. A large sand colored head forms and has great retention. A large cap remains throughout. A large amount of spotty lacing is left on the glass. Aroma is pretty straight forward amber. A little sweet malt and that is about it. Nothing wrong with the flavor, it actually tastes good, but with this ABV and touting honey and maple syrup, I was expecting much, much more. Just slightly sweet overall and very low bitterness. The alcohol at first was noticeable but after a few sips it seems to have mellowed out. The body is not as big as it should be for a larger beer but has very good carbonation. I believe this is bottle-conditioned so good job there. Overall I thought this was a well made beer but very mediocre in the aroma and flavor department. I certainly would drink again.

Pours a clear, dark golden color. 1/5 inch head of an off-white color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of yeast, pale malt, grain, and slight honey. Fits the style of an American Amber / Red Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of yeast, pale malt, grain, slight dry hop, and honey. Overall, too much grain in aroma and body.

From a 12-oz bottle it pours a brilliant amber-red and develops a creamy, pocketed, tan, 1-inch head. Malt and honey on the nose and palate with modest bitterness in the lingering. Medium body. Very faint maple syrup taste - I would not have found/identified it without the label's suggestion. Some lace does develop. The alcohol is not evident on the palate. As such the ale may have a surprise head-effect. I do not expect to seek this ale again this year, but would not decline if offered.

Bottle poured into a mug.

A- 1/2-finger khaki head drops to a thin film. Clean, amber-copper body with moderate carbonation. Really good sticky rings are left on the glass. I'm a sucker for stick.

S- Nice mix of malt and hops. Caramel and light fruit. Leafy hops. Not so robust.

T- Slightly charred caramel. Definitely malt forward. Enough hopping to keep it well within the amber ale profile. Leafy/tobaccoish hops. I like it.

M- Medium body and moderate carbonation. Sweetness make for a lingering, slightly coating feel.

O- It's a pretty good beer that exceeded my expectations. The charred flavor is different, but a welcome change from the normal amber profile. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again.

This beer looks thick, completely opaque in its body and red-brown in color. Oddly, just the bottom 1/2 inch is translucent. 3/4 of a finger of brown head is formed and shows intermediate staying power as it forms a ring from the foam and follows with spotting.
The aroma consists of earth, mineral and leaf with a gentle touch of sweetness , almost English-style overall. A bit of the yeast comes out while the honey takes time but eases in.
It's sharper on the tongue, moderately bitter with earth and leaf, slightly herbal, as the malts lay down a taste of thick breads. It works pretty nicely, though it needs to be warmed to allow the subtle maple flavor to come out. Do, though, and it will. The sweetness is countered by dryness as it finishes with a lightly chalky note.
It's got an even medium body that certainly works for the style, and the even keel between the firm but not overbearing crispness and the middling sort of smoothness pulls together well. It never gets too sweet, even ending on the dry side as the mild chalkiness translates to the feel.

Undated 12 oz bottle from Sicilianos (Grand Rapids; August 2013) served in a snifter.

A: pours dark amber-brown color; lightly hazy; very little head despite a vigorous pour, yet traces of foam are quite durable. Leaves only a few small spots of lacing.

Smell: A bit sweet, like a high ABV amber beer, with hints of caramel and old bread.

Taste: Starts sweet, ends with a faint hop note added in a bitter/sweet finish.

Feel: Medium-light body with low carbonation.. Not as much carbonation as I would prefer. Some bite from the alcohol.

O: largely an imperial amber, at over 8% ABV, this beer provides the substantial sweet, light- and medium-roast malts of an amber with a high gravity ale. Lacks finesse.

$1.79 for a 12oz bottle from Siciliano's. Thanks Maddog for picking this up for me.

A: darker copper-colored beer, clear, with a nice creamy head that is thinner but definitely there, dissipated to thin veil, nice lacing
S: full nose, pronounced earthy grain
T: nice taste, definitely more on the malt/grainy side, good roasted qualities with hints of smokiness
M: creamy, easy drinking for ABV, slightly cloying but not distracting

A - It is rust colored with burnt orange highlights. It is topped with two inches of beige head with no lacing.

S - I smell caramel, molasses, and alcohol.

T - I taste toast with hints of caramel. The alcohol is apparent.

M - Medium

O - I was hoping for more from this beer. I found no traces of the maple or honey. It is average at best.

A: Pours a clear, very dark amber in color. Maybe even light brown. Fairly translucent. Forms a small, off white head that dissipates to absolutely nothing. Very minimal lacing.

S: Smells of a blend of malts, caramel, wood and peat.

T: Tastes the same. Unsurprisingly malty with an odd earthy astringency. Caramel, wood, and toast.

M: Medium bodied and undercarbonated. Not flat, but approaching it. Dry, chalky, and bitter (and not in a good way)

O: A fairly average beer.

Very slight woody aroma with a hint of sweet, flowery hops.

Pours with very little head, but an unusual, nearly solid wall of bubbles clings to the side of the glass without rising to the surface. An interesting display in the otherwise clear amber brew.

Hop bitterness and a little tinny taste up front, which mellows along the palate with a bit of sweetness and a good, warm bitters aftertaste. Made with maple syrup and honey, according to the web site (the url is about the only information on the label), but their flavors were barely detectable, at least to my taste buds with this pour. Strong alcohol component (web site says 8.2% abv) releases volatiles in the back palate for a good finish.

I'll have to try a few more with some wood-fired pizza or drink it on tap at Mountain Town Station to get a better feeling for this one, but it is definitely very drinkable.

Pleasant, fruity ale. More like an Old Ale with the winey, raisin flavors and malty strength. Amber color with a hint of orange in the tulip glass. Quite rich but interestingly cut with a distinct acidity, reminiscent of red wine. But rather sweet. Biscuits and yeast. Long fragrant nose of fruit cake and rum. This is like a lighter sort of barley wine, with a rewarding complexity as you sip. Yet another interesting Michigan beer that seems to sprawl across the styles.
