Poor old misunderstood brown ale... It is perhaps the most versatile style of beer in the world, but is often overlooked. Why?
Does the word brown lead the mind towards less appetizing things? Is it because the colour brown is less sexy than, say, 'golden'? Or have the mass brewing companies driven the style into oblivion by claiming it for their most unattractive products? Mull that over while you sip this beer, either in the sun, in front of the barbie, with your afternoon steak and kidney pie, your Sunday roast, or just by itself because you're thirsty and deserve a treat!
Chances are that this is unlike any brown ale you have ever tasted: it's malty, hoppy, roasty, flavoursome and refreshing. Some might say it's Brown Ale 'redefined', we'd say it's REWIRED. Cheers! The recipe varies slightly from batch to batch but includes: Gladfield pale malt, munich malt, crystal malt, caramalt, chocolate malt, oat malt. Hops are NZ Pacific Jade, Cascade and Pacifica.

This was poured into a becher pint glass. The appearance was a dark brown color with a thin concave off white little head that dissipated at a nice pace. Lacing was mildly sticking here and there, looked good for the most part. The smell started off with a ton of rich deep sticky dark fruits roaming into a subtle dry cocoa and slight coffee bean eloquence. Dry woody and subtle vanilla graces the underneath. The taste was a nice dry sweet dark fruity stickiness sliding into subtle roasty cocoa and dry coffee. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs really light. The sweet dark fruity stickiness wants to cling to my tongue but isn’t exactly too overbearing, not cloying. Overall, leaning to the English side of the wheelhouse of a brown ale, I’d say this works, it shows all of the characteristics of the style.

Disclosure: aged for 4+ years. given the style, prob should not have done it but got left behind. all things considered, its drinkable as the signs of aging although there are not overwhelming. pours a simple brown with thin off-white head that quickly disappears. mostly clear but does have some hazyness (prob from yeast deposits). minimal lacing. body is quite thin as is its texture. carbonation is a bit light. not much in terms of astringency. flavor is a muted combination of sweet and roasty malts, with a hint of chocolate. some oxidation shows up and there’s a bothersome harshness that lingers in the aftertaste. that's probably coming from what once was NZ hop bitterness. - as you would expect, finishes with short muted sweetness. --- to many this would be a drinkable beer still... score is a combination of what I experienced with this half liter bottle (2/5) and what I remember the fresh Rewired to taste like (4/5).

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.
Comes out silently.. This has me a bit concerned, but also with an excellent aroma right off the pour (to get to later). However, the body color is a simple dark mahogany brown, and manages barely a thin puck while being poured. Still manages a collar, and some life, but the beer looks a little flat and dead on arrival.
Aroma though is quite impressive. There is a very big note of cocoa powder on first examination, then followed with a bit of cola like sweetness. Invigorating with a unique twist. Some faint toast, a little small though, but otherwise a very unexpected angle for a brown ale.
This is very different, and a real unique take on a brown on the palate. Where do I begin? Light bodied roast character more like a porter with some quick char, then the mid palate fills with milk chocolate and slight toasty aromas. Mouthfeel is pale ale and light as feather but does have some malt depth and is in the right territory. Finishes with blasting cocoa dry warmth, even some hop oils as well of mild grapefruit and citrus tones. All of these flavors are also real well balanced and surprisingly integrated excellently.
What an odd take but delicious angle on a brown ale. This might be old but it's still drinkable, but there's no way I can tell. Either way it’s a really neat brown ale and drinks easily, this will be gone in no time, too bad it looks a bit lousy.

As my hero bubbles would say, "Decent!" Brown ale, brown trout, and New Zealand all have a weird intergalactic positive vibe for me. The lovely thing about this beer is the smooth combination of malt, brown sugar, and piney hoppiness.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a dark mahogany brown with orange tints and a nice one finger khaki head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, nuts, hints of caramel and light grassy hops. Flavor is lightly toasted malt, nuts, coffee and light grassy hops, developing a distinct charred, almost smoked malt flavor into a dry finish with residual char and grassy hops. Medium bodied with almost overactive carbonation. A nice take on the hoppy brown ale style, with interesting char and smoke flavors usually found in bigger stouts. Unfortunately no dates on the bottle, but the hops taste a bit faded, and I suspect that this bottle didn't pass quickly from New Zealand through our staggeringly slow and inefficient distribution system. I liked this well enough but it left me wishing I could taste it fresh with original hop flavors.

Ruby brown with tan film. 3.75
Sour malt nose with some oxidation. 3.5
Tart red berry, some sourness, brownies, hints of whiskey barrel and clean roast. 3.5
Leafy end and clean linger.
Fizzy, almost medium, slight chew. 3.75
At its expiry date and lost a step for sure - especially hops, which the label calls out. At the same time, I’m not sure there was much depth and complexity here to start with - definitely the lean end of brown. Don’t think I missed much here. 3.5
