Saisons have been around for ages. Traditionally brewed by Belgian and French farmers to provide refreshment during harvest. I'm guessing that flavour wasn't a main concern back then; the priority was to provide a beverage that was safe to drink, because water usually wasn't. Never the less, over time they developed a beverage chrarissed by beer geeks of the modern world. The alcohol content was low, so the workers could consume enough to keep hydrated and still perform their job: To load the barn with enough barley for next years brewing season. I bet these hardworking, humble farmers never imagined, that centuries later, their style of brewing would inspire brewers from all over the world. As all our beers, this is a very modern, you might say new world, interpretation of this style. Based on the tradition we have used a French Saison yeast, which provides a plethora of funky, earthy, very "Belgian" flavours. From there we have upped the ante a fair bit by doubling the amount of malt, and thereby the alcohol, and loaded the kettle with punchy Nelson Sauvin hops. Unlike the original, this is not a beer meant to be drunk by the gallon. Moderation is the key for full enjoyment of all great beers.

500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7%. Deep golden colour, large white head. Lovely aroma of Nelson Sauvin hops, with notes of gooseberries, white grapes and tropical fruits, also a hint of pine. The flavour is medium sweet and very fruity, Nelson Sauvin elements dominate, but the beer is not too bitter. The Belgian / French saison yeast is more subdued. A fine and very drinkable beer!

22 oz. Bomber > Ommegang tall tulip glass
Crystal clear and active looking gold color. Fluffy and tall, all foam cap. Excellent retention. Lacy leftovers.
The nose has a serious funk of earthy hay fields, crushed herbs and spices, dank leafy dryness, green veggies and spicy wild fruits down deep. A very robust, yet classic Saison style aroma here. Very bold and very funky nose!
A very spicy and herbal bite at first, medicinal, earthy-dry tones mixed with just the right amount of honey sweet style golden maltiness. A very classic Belgian/French approach to the style, much more complexity and excellent funk coming from the yeast strain, opposed to the more neutral yeast of more Americanized versions of the same style. I really judge this style based on the depth of charecter coming from the yeast strain or strains. The malt laso needs to be in proper balance. This one scores big on both accounts.
Regarding the yeast...it really has that green veggie and earthy funk with a big hit of herbal and spicy tones that seem to go on and on.
The mouthfeel starts out with a crisp and spicy bite, then dry, smooth malty, crisp andcdry again in the finish. It really just seems to evaporate in the finish, which is exactly how I like it.
The Nelson Sauvin hops straight from New Zeland seems to add even more earth & Spice to the already, amped-up yeast kick. A very nice added bonus and funky X-factor to this one.

De Bierkraft. En copa Teku. Jugando a Tower of Doom. Muchisima espuma. A pesar de su alta carbonatacion y no estar fresca, las notas funk de una saison se entremezcla perfectamente con el nelson sauvin

Really good saison that comes off as complex and yet simple. Aroma is almost as if it was wine barrel aged. Nothing on the bottle indicates that it was so perhaps it comes from the Nelson Sauvin Hop.I'm not sure. The beer is well balanced however with the earthy and tropical/citrus taste that comes through. Drinks light and smooth for all that is going on when you taste it initially. Finishes with a sweet turn that leaves the mouth watering a bit for more. Because of that smoothness it is very drinkable. Love to try more of this Nelson hop to get a better read of what it can do.
