I visited Utrecht for the first time on 25SEP16 and made Olivier my first bier-stop....

After winding my way through a maze of pedestrian-infested alleys and side-streets, I found Olivier. Though it is located in a former church, it looks more like a typical Old-world European building from the front. There were 6-8 tables out front under large umbrellas, but I opted for inside. Once in you can see that it was most def a church in a former life. The long axis ran from front to back, with a bar on the mid-left... There were numerous tables of from 2 to 6-8 chairs scattered about, with a number of small partitions creating separation. There was lots of dark wood on the lower parts of the room, but the place had a very high, vaulted, arched white ceiling. The upper level in the rear had what looked like an organ, too. Lots of old bier signs and placards adorned the walls. All in all, it had a super, warm and comfy feel. The staff was quite friendly and helpful throughout my visit. The biers were solid, though it was a pretty basic, standard Belgian/Dutch assortment, with nothing mind-boggling or hard to find. Still, an enjoyable first visit! Prosit!!

Cafe Oliver is located just around the corner from the main train station, on the edge of the city center. It is a very convenient stop for people who are in the country and can plan a few hours in Utrecht when on their way to a more popular destination. The stop is definitely worth it.

The cafe is in a beautiful old church. Many of the old elements are still there, and the layout and decor is very attractive. It can get noisy inside, but the beauty of the setting makes this a non issue. This is a very popular place after work, and the "gezelligheid" certainly benifits from that.

There is nothing wrong with the quality of their product, though it is on the pricey side. Some of their more expensive beers, such as the Rochefort 10 and Chimay Blue, can be around 6 Euro. Expensive, but you're also paying for the building and location. The food is also quite expensive, though it is well-prepared and tasty.

Their beer list is certainly one of the better ones in the city; probably in the top 3. That said, for a "beer bar," it is no better than average. All of the usual Belgian and Dutch suspects are here, including lots of trappist and abbey ales, as well as some of the more comercial brands. You won't find anything rare or exceptional here, but you will have a solid choice of quality brews from the low countries.

All in all, Cafe Oliver is a nice cafe with a solid menu and beer list, located in one of the most beautiful buildings a bar has ever occupied. A stop here for a beer and some lunch is a good option, whether you're spending the day in Utrecht, or are just killing a few hours before your train to Amsterdam or Germany. It's too expensive and its beer list too limited to warrant an entire drinking session, but stopping for a drink and to check out the lovely interior is definitely worth it.
