This will be my third entry for New Odds & Sods Beer Sunday (Week 651). I CANnot remember if I acquired this CAN while attending a CANvention, or from a couple who live there & who are known to send me beers. No matter.

From the CAN: "Proudly Brewed and Packaged by Straight to Ale ... Southern Born Southern Brewed".

The Crack! reminded me of the early days of CANned beers, since I got a Pssshh! to go along with it. I began a gentle Glug, but the foaming was too much for me & I had to stop. I watched as it formed two-plus fingers of dense, rocky, eggshell-white head with excellent retention, leaving sticky lacing behind as it fell. Color was a slightly hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose smelled mostly of grapefruit, but I have been fooled by aroma hops before. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very much of grapefruit & bitterness, but where was the malt? It was playing one note, but a disCANnont one. It slowly came up with some tropical fruitiness, but the Citra hops were dominant & overpowering. Finish was more bitter than dry, but for a session IPA. I would be done after one.

A: Pours a relatively pale medium amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate medium golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy beige head that slowly reduces to a couple of small to medium sized patches of medium thick film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of citrus/grapefruit, tropical/mango, floral, and spicy hops over the top of light aromas of grainy malts.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of cereal grain + biscuit malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by slightly stronger than moderate flavors of citrus/grapefruit, tropical/mango, floral, and spicy hops which impart a light to moderate amount of lingering bitterness.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink and enjoyable, maybe a touch too intense in the hoppiness to be truly sessionable. Definitely worth grabbing and I would be happy to have another from this brewery (looking forward to trying some of there other IPAs).

Appearance: Light clear golden. white cap with good lacing.

Aroma: Fairly strong earthy hops, spicy, piney, dark root vegetable leaf present. Malt well hidden.

Taste: Hop taste so thick you can almost chew it. It's a good taste albeit somewhat simple. Sweet malt acts as a carrier and isn't strong enough to balance but it's presence is noted. Good strong clean finish with a refreshing hop aftertaste and no lingering bitterness.

Texture: Mild to medium depending on one's take.

Overall: Less is more, so they say, but sometimes it's just less. I'll take a flying stab and call this a Session IPA, partly because that's how it tastes and partly because the Brewer uses that phrase as well. ABV isn't listed but this isn't very strong. Another instance where Original Gravity was dialed back some but the hop hopper remained wide open. With the really good IPAs this Brewery already produces I don't see why they bother with this unless they just need a Session in the line to give everybody a choice. IPA Light I guess.

Sweet and lovely on the front end, dry and super hoppy on the back end. Leaves an interesting feeling on the tongue. Overall good, but not that sessionable in my opinion, besides the low abv.

Poured from a 12 ounce can into a Teku glass. Best before 26 August 2016.
4/4.25/4/4.5/4
Pours a lightly hazy gold with a nice finger of white head.
Smells pleasantly -- and modernly -- hoppy. Some Mosaic or Topaz or Falconer's Flight. You know, the beautifully trendy stuff that smells like fruit and a hint of weed.
Remarkably full-bodied at first blush. Plenty of malty sugars, and this is a mostly sweet beer, with the copious, dry hops contributing more fruit than bitterness. A hint of mint and herbs, but no pine or citric rind. Thankfully, it's just light enough to avoid the odd syrupiness that has begun to characterize StA's beers of late. It's there, but just enough to add a nice body.
Overally, a delightful session (that may not be as sessionable as you like) that is near the forefront of Straight to Ale's current line up (behind the wondrous Laika). Recommended.

Poured from the tap into a pint glass at the brewery. The appearance is a cloudy orange yellow with a large white head. The taste is a medium hop. A good Beer.
