Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.25%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Albert. Able. Gordo. Miss Baker. Bonny. Goliath. Between 1948 and 1961 these primate pioneers and others bravely went where no man had ever gone before, paving the way for manned U.S. spaceflight. This hoppy little monkey of a beer is a tribute to those Simian heroes of yesteryear. It has a citrusy, floral hop aroma, a strong malt body and a crisp finish.

Not a terrible beer but not that great either. There are way too many IPAs that I'd rather drink. There is a very solid malt backbone which I liked but the single dimension hop profile just fell flat on me and did not do any justice to the IBU's present in this brew.

Served in a large (15.5 oz) brandy snifter.

A - Pours a brown-orange color with a half-finger of creamy white head that dissipated after about a minute. Moderate lacing. It seems a little dark for the style.

S - Popped open the can and was greeted with more malt than hops (canned 1/2, drank 3/8; that shouldn't be long enough to cause so much hop dissipation). Poured into my glass; the hops are there, just not very forward. Picking up a slight bubblegum smell, as well as something like carrots. Very unique. There's an underlying component of the smell that's frankly a little like vomit; it's not highly pronounced, but it's unappetizing when you pick up some of that.

T - Pineapple, orange rind, perhaps even a little brown sugar. Finishes slightly bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. Slight alcohol burn that's right in line with its 7.25% abv, though I've definitely had higher alcohol IPAs that mask it a little better. The aftertaste is actually quite good and makes you want to reach for more; it's just comparatively disappointing on the front end.

M - Right in line for the style. Slightly creamy, very smooth.

O - This was my first beer from Straight to Ale. It's nothing particularly special. The smell is a bit off-putting. Overall, a decent beer. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it, but I'd probably give it another try if I saw it at a restaurant since it seemed like it would balance nicely against pizza or a burger. It's just not all that good on its own, though it does leave me curious to try some of their other offerings.

Thanks to richj1970 for this one!

A - Pours a dark copper color with a soapy looking head and sticky lacing, carbonation is active and constant.

S - The aroma is mostly caramel toasted malt with a hint of citrus and herbs.

T - Herbal caramel toasted malt with a bitter lemon and grapefruit finish. Malt up front with a little bit of hop presence and just the opposite on the back side. Moderate lingering bitter finish.

M - Full medium body.

O - Balanced.

I've had Monkeynaut twice, once in a can and then on tap. On tap it was definitely better. It's a darker IPA that kind of feels like a mix between an IPA and a Lager. It can be a little harsh on the pallet, but if you let it warm up just a touch it brings the more subtle flavors out. It's a good one to try, it's just not one of my personal favorites.

Another in a long line of beers provided by the legendary woodychandler. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has an orangeish color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of piney hops. Taste is piney hops, bitter up front, malts kicking in towards the finish. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, but I was not blown away by it.

Not bad, but tastes like a home brewed beer. Definitely not an 87 out of 100. I'd say 70/100
