Style: Dubbel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maimed in an accident that left him with a hunched back, Brother Joseph Zoettl worked in the St. Bernard Abbey power plant shoveling coal. In his spare time, Brother Joseph used found objects such as marbles and chunks of concrete and tile to build miniature shrines and buildings on the Abbey grounds. Over 40 years, he created 125 different models and replicas. Today, the Ave Maria Grotto covers three acres and is world-renowned as both a fun roadside attraction and an awe-inspiring collection of folk art. We have named our Belgian dubbel after Brother Joseph as a testament to his perseverance, his hard work, and his indomitable spirit. A full-flavored abbey-style ale with a complex taste and aroma, Brother Joseph’s Dubbel is filled with specialty malt and dark fruit character.

I have been drinking this beer for 3 years now. And I loved it then just as much as i do now. I live in north central alabama so this beer is semi-easy to find.

appearance: is brownish with a slight hint of red

smell: not sure i have a lousy nose

taste: im not gonna break it down like how many do. all i can say is its good and goes good with steak & cheesecake both

mouthfeel: easy to drink i enjoy the medium carbonation

overall: i like it

12 FL. OZ. can
Served in a goblet

This beer pours tea colored with less than an inch of tan head that leaves little lacing.

It has a candy-like sweet smell. I get some molasses, fig, and red fruit.

It has a sweet malty taste. I get some spiced fig as well.

Medium mouthfeel with low carbonation

This is a pretty good dubbel. It is sweet and malty with some Belgian yeast characteristics.

Poured into a pint glass

A: Mahogany colored with an off-white one-finger head that didn't linger. Decent lacing.

S: Belgian yeast pops up, along with dark fruits (raisins, dates, plums).

T: Follows nose with a nice chocolate finish as it warms. Malty and sweet. Goes down easy.

M: Medium with light to medium carbonation.

O: A very tasty dubbel. Will be drinking more of this one. The Belgian yeast really makes it pop. Try a pint.

A sessionable Belgian-style with its own character, but not overly sweet?

Sign me up!

Carbonation is lacking- fix that please, and I will make this beer canonical.

Originally rated in 2014 on tap and adjusted with a 12 oz can in March 2015.
Medium+ body.
Deep, dark, red-brown body covered by a head that has poor retention.

O: Good but lacks the depth, complexity and balance of a fine Belgian dubbel.

Reddish brown pour with 1/4 inch off white foam. Sweet malty aroma. Malty, yeasty and nutty with a buttery and dry finish. Slightly bitter but very little detectable hop flavor. Slight lacing on the glass with solid carbonation. A decent and drinkable example of the style.

With a strong flavor of Belgian yeast and a lively mouthful, this is a fair bit sweeter than most Belgian dubbels., and personally, I found that sweetness to be quite enjoyable.

Draft from bar at concert venue.

A: Poured ruby red with 2 finger head that the bartender promptly poured off the side to fill the glass up all the way. Hard to jug lacing and head retention.

S: Belgian yeast, caramel, and plums.

T: Nice spiciness with some clove and all spice flavors. Lots of fruits - banana, plum, raisin. Sweet finish.

M: Medium body with fair carbonation. Tends a bit on the sweeter side but in a pleasant way.

O: A nice dubbel. Enjoyable to drink. Not the best in the group, but a solid choice especially for a local brew.

Thanks to Jim for this one!
Canned 2/2/15

Pours a reddish amber with a thin layer of tan foam, it ebbs away quickly after the first sip, minimal spotty lacing.

Aromas of yeast, light clove phenols, spice cake, dried currants.

Taste is similarly yeast forward with a light clove spice component, toasted wheat bread crusts, light sweetness at first but ends with a dry phenolic finish. Light pepper, thin bodied, carbonation seems to ebb quickly. Overall it's not bad and I enjoyed it. Thanks again Jim!
