Brewed by:
Moab Brewery
Utah, United States

Style: California Common / Steam Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our steamer beer is a unique 100% style lager. Brewed with a special strain of lager yeast that works better at warmer temperatures. This method dates back to the late 1800s, when refrigeration was a greater luxury. Amber in color, medium bodied with a malty character. Mildly fruity with an assertive hop bitterness and a crisp clean finish.

Starts out with a nice mouthful of flavor. The usual watery body that makes for a pleasant quaff. Clear, on the dark side of amber in the tall glass. Plenty of suds. A little bit of the biscuit aroma.

Fair amount of malt with some toasty, roasted flavors. The classic amber flavor with earthy hints. Some sweetness from the malt. A moderate bitterness, and more in the aftertaste.

From the 16 oz can, a nice size for these 4% beers. Thanks to Dan's supermarket in Salt Lake for this one.

I tried this at the brewery. It poured a clear golden with white head that did not leave any lace. The scent had subtle grain notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with biscuit flare. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it was an ok beer.

Pours a very nice reddish/amber color, nice carbonation, with a nice one-finger creamy off-white head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, slight hop note, lots of caramel. The taste is malty, and bitter, kinda nutty. Medium body. Not a bad brew at all.

Beer #9 in the great Utah Brew Hunt.

My first beer from Moab.

Right on. Kudos for putting out an amber lager. Don't seem to see to many of those.

A pretty decent example of the style, though quite earthy and rustic at first. Malts seem quite pronounced and thorough as time goes on. Flavor is consistent and even. Carbonation seems a bit high, but it's no matter. The beer is pretty solid and overall well made.

One of the earlier breweries to put their offerings into cans. This pours a dark golden yellow to light amber in a seemingly familiar appearance contrasted with the originator Anchor Steam. Appearance is solid, head is 1/2" on the top and has above average retention.

Aroma hits the toasted malt notes, doesn't really reveal too much in the way of a lager or fruity lager steam kind of beer yeast, more like a familiar AAL type of lager yeast. Nothing in terms of corn, seems all barley.

Taste is pretty normal. Like a bulked up macro lager in the malt department, but otherwise, the lager yeast and high carbonation seem pretty traditional at this point in time. Its a decent beer, but impossible to get drunk off of without any wow power that a low abv beer would need to drink more than one of.

Clear red colored beer with a small tan colored head.

Smells malty with a scent of scorched sugar and mealy grain. Toasted grain and mild grass and tea scents. Mildly yeasty. Very mild fruity aromas.

Starts out mildly sweet with a caramel flavor. Mild hop leaf with a slight tobacco flavor. Tastes OK but is really light.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Overall this is OK but nothing great.

Deep copper to amber in color with a quarter inch head of creamy beige head. The aroma is of chestnuts and caramel. I'm tasting light flavors of chestnut, caramel, and just a hint of smoke. The mouth is light, smooth, and crisp.

Poured from a tall can into a glass. One finger of head on an amber colored body. The aroma is a fragrant wet grain smell. The taste is nice with light grain, mild bitter and a little spice. Fairly rich taste for a lager.
The texture is smooth with moderate carbonation.
A lager with some heft.

16oz, 12/27/12
DFH IPA glass

A: Pours a hazy amber. About a finger of slightly off white head. Some sticky lacing.

S: Smells bready. Caramel malts. Some nuttiness. Grainy malts. Some slight earthy hops.

T: Light earthy piney hops up front, very light. Then it's all malts. True to lager despite appearance. Crisp dry finish.

M: Medium bodied.
