Small pour at NE location. Color of burnished copper, small ring of fine white head. Aroma is subtle, malty with light piney notes. Taste follows with an equal blend of malt and hops , malt slightly coming out on top. Bone dry. Pretty smooth considering the ABV. Deceptive and delicious

Last year's was better. ;-) 2015 version. Pour a caramel amber color, decent head, fades quickly, no lacing. Smell is all dank, resinous, catty, funyon / onion. If that's your jam, this is pounding the beat. No citrus, fruit, pine. Drinks the same - dankness, weed with a sweet chaser ... almost like agave. A bit of alcohol heat but nothing like the Simtra's of the world. It's got a creamy feel, thick but not coating. Impressive for the 11%+ bomb. Definitely some malt working here. There should be bonus points for dope bottle and the graffiti painted bombers would win.

PNW doing work in the Triple IPA realm, for sure.

Poured from a spray painted bomber into an enlarged snifter. This was released a couple weeks ago at the brewery.

Appearance: Pours a deep copper and just lets a little bit of light through. Leaves an off white head of a couple fingers that lingers around for a while. (4.25)

Smell: Big pine and spruce, caramel malts, hints of mango and tropical fruits, honey. Real nice and quite aromatic. (4.75)

Taste: Some pine, but more mango and tropical in the taste. A bit dry until the finish which is a little juicy. Very interesting. Quite drinkable for the ABV. Really nice finish for such a big IPA. (4.5)

Mouth-feel: Thick and creamy with a medium carbonation. Real nice feel to it. (4.75)

Overall: This is a great Triple IPA, and definitely hits the style to a T. Tons of hops, but with a big malt profile that gives it its backbone and keeps it real drinkable. I love the pine in the aroma and the big, balanced flavor in the taste. Really nice, thick body for an IPA. (4.5)

I drank this side by side several times with Pliny the Younger, and as much as I love Pliny, this beer was better in every way. Beautiful floral nose, rich copper color and a better balance. Tons of hops (duh) but enough malt for balance and not as dry or astringent as PtY. Both world class, but the one I saved for my last taste was the Safe Word every time.

On tap at the brewery.

Pouring amber with a thin white head that falls off to a ring leaving little lacing , this looks solid. The nose is dominated by a juicy and fruity hop character that is overrun with a candied orange and mild caramel sweetness. Honey, citrus, pine, hoppy but lacking in pungency and clean hop character. The palate opens moderately sweet with honey, mild toffee and plenty of citrusy and fruity hop character. Pine, orange, grapefruit and mild floral flavors are present aplenty. The sweetness on the mid palate is a little disappointing and takes away from the flavor profile. Sweet, sticky but not particularly resiny on the finish, this beer is medium full in body and moderately carbonated. Alcohol is well hidden. Decent.

Arrived too early at the Brewpub on a Monday, but as it turned out, the Horse Brass had this beauty on tap as well (which is where I found it).

The beer pours an orange copper color with a soft, pillowy white head and excellent retention. This "TIPA" has an almost viscuous look about it, and you can tell this is not going to be your typical IPA/DIPA. The nose is impressive as well, though it was clearly dominated by pine, light tropical fruit and a hint of underlying citrus. On the palate, this beer is just delicious. The beer is resinous and rich, starting off with considerable sweetness, that is quickly overtaken by a tidal wave of piney hoppy goodness. The finish is long and bitter, but the bitterness is by no means over the top. Mouthfeel is fairly full, with just a hint of heat from the 11% abv. As noted above, the finish is quite long, with just a kiss of alcoholic bite at the end. Drinkability is pretty damn good, though the high alcohol does wear on you. The beer was sold by the half pint at the HB ($6.25 a pop), and I found that after a glass of this and blue dot, that was as much as I could do at one sitting (though I was very tempted to get another glass of Safe Word). This beer reminded me quite a bit of the poseur from Double Mountain, though I didn't think it was quite as piney as the DM beer.

Excellent beer. Have not been a huge fan of Breakside stuff so far, but this is in a completely different league. Easily the best beer I have ever had from Breakside...
